Branch and Unit Combined Air Support Unit

Civilian Posting Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this position is responsible for performing and certifying scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on rotary wing aircraft to ensure continued airworthiness, operational readiness, and compliance with Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), manufacturer standards, and DRPS policies. The role supports maintenance control, technical records, inventory, and quality assurance activities, and contributes to operational planning and safety management to ensure aircraft availability for critical police operations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Aircraft Maintenance & Airworthiness

  • Assist with acting as a maintenance authority for all Air Support aircraft, ensuring continued airworthiness in accordance with: o Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) o Approved Maintenance Control Manuals (MCM) o Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (AMM) o Transport Canada Airworthiness Directives (ADs) o Manufacturer service bulletins and instructions
  • Certify maintenance releases within the scope of AME licence and applicable type ratings.
  • Ensure all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance is completed accurately, efficiently, and to required manufacturer standards.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on aircraft.
  • Assists the Chief Engineer with administrative duties including: o Maintaining aircraft maintenance schedule and aircraft technical records as per Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) o Maintaining a system of control of aircraft parts inventory o Ensuring technical and regulatory library is current o Quality assurance of work performed on aircraft o Places parts orders to vendors, shipping, receiving and parts delivery o Periodic external and internal cleaning of the Air Support aircraft.

Maintenance Control & Shop Management

  • Assist with managing and overseeing the helicopter maintenance shop, tooling, and technical resources.
  • Assist with developing, implementing, and maintaining maintenance procedures, policies, and practices consistent with CARs and DRPS requirements.
  • Assist with scheduling and prioritizing maintenance activities to maximize aircraft availability while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in maintain inventory control of tools, parts, and consumables, including tracking of life limited components.
  • Liaising with approved vendors, manufacturers, Transport Canada, and external maintenance organizations as required.

Standards, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with: o Safety Management System (SMS) requirements o Quality assurance and internal audit processes o Maintenance recordkeeping and technical logs o Tool control program o Flight safety reporting
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate maintenance related hazards and risks.
  • Report incidents, defects, and safety concerns in accordance with DRPS and Transport Canada requirements (CADORS).
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, technical logs, and component histories.

Operational Support & Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with: o Inspector Field Support o Chief Engineer o Chief Pilot / Operations Manager o Line Pilots o Tactical Flight Officers (TFOs)
  • Support operational planning by providing technical input related to aircraft capabilities, limitations, and availability.
  • Assist with aircraft acquisition, modification programs, and fleet lifecycle planning.
  • Support aircraft deployments, training, and off site operations as required.
  • Working with Joint Air Support Unit (JASU) maintenance partners in exploring staggered maintenance to ensure JASU effectiveness and interoperability.

Supervision & Leadership

  • The Senior Engineer may coach and/or mentor any apprentices and monitors any contractors or third parties performing work on DRPS aircraft.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Completion of a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aviation Maintenance / Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Avionics Engineering / Electronics Engineering or a related field of study; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Valid Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer M1/M2 (AME) Licence.
  • Valid Ontario Drivers Licence.
  • Transport Canada recognized helicopter type rating(s) relevant to the fleet (e.g., AS350 / Airbus H125, Bell 206B), or willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum 5 years in aircraft maintenance within regulated aviation environments, with extensive expertise in maintenance control systems, inspections, and full compliance with Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) and established quality assurance frameworks.
  • Comprehensive technical expertise in rotary-wing aircraft systems, encompassing diagnostics, troubleshooting, and system integration.
  • Solid working knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) and maintenance governance frameworks, ensuring strict regulatory compliance.
  • Highly developed organizational and planning capabilities, with proven ability to manage competing priorities in dynamic environments.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decisive decision-making under operational pressure, maintaining safety and efficiency.
  • Proficient in maintenance tracking systems and Microsoft Office suite, supporting accurate documentation, reporting, and workflow management.
  • Experience maintaining Airbus AS350 / H125 /B206B or similar turbine helicopters will be considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting police, military, EMS, or other mission critical aviation units will be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with night operations, special mission equipment, and aircraft modifications will be considered an asset.

Hours Shift Work (members must be flexible and available to respond to emergency situations after hours and may be required to work on a stand-by basis in accordance to the applicable 2025-2029 DRPS Collective Agreement).

Salary Level This position is starting at Level 12 position $140,276 (2025-2029 Collective Agreement)
