About the role
The Assistant Program at Spirit of Math provides senior students with hands-on work experience, taking on real employee responsibilities in a professional setting. This role fosters leadership as students serve as role models, gain confidence in group interactions, refine communication, and develop professionalism, organization, and essential skills for future success.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Hours of Work
- Arrive no later than 20 minutes before class so that you are ready to start working 15 minutes before class starts
- Stay until the last child leaves, everything is put away and any other tasks for the teacher are finished (be prepared for this to take more than 15 minutes!)
- If you are going to be absent, find a replacement at least a week ahead of time
- In cases of sudden illness, try to find a replacement and if not, let the office know by 1:00 pm
Assisting Students
- Keep a full set of class notes and ensure that students get any missed work
- Complete all of the homework yourself at least one week ahead of the class
- Before class, get students settled and answer any homework questions
- During the teaching period, walk around class and help students organize and write good notes and ensure that they are on task
- Help weaker students during class - sit beside them if necessary!
Attendance
- For the Assistant Teacher, this includes lateness, absents, and homework not done
Phone parents if a student is absent 15 minutes after class starts
- Let them know if there have been any missed tests or handouts
- Ensure that everything is fine (i.e. parents know the child is not at class)
Marking
- Some marking during the week. This includes True/False or multiple-choice type questions- ensure that you have marked it by the next class, and you are there to hand it to the teacher.
Experience:
- Previous or current enrollment in a Spirit of Math program is an asset.

All Spirit of Math teachers are university graduates who complete a comprehensive Fundamentals of Teaching Mathematics Course program and participate in ongoing professional development.
