About the role

If you’re passionate about building a positive safety culture and want to make a real impact, this could be the role for you. We’re looking for a full-time Health and Safety Advisor to join Tonkin + Taylor, supporting our regional operations in Tauranga, Hamilton and Rotorua.

In this role, you’ll work alongside leaders and teams as a trusted advisors, helping embed a proactive and practical health, safety and wellbeing (HSW) culture into day-to-day work. You’ll also partner with our national HSW team to support continuous improvement, strengthen our systems, and meet statutory, industry and client requirements.

This role supports delivery of our HSW 5-year strategic plan. You’ll be involved in rolling out initiatives, supporting assurance activity (audits, inspections and site visits), and helping teams manage both planned improvements and operational (BAU) HSW needs. Workload will be busy, with opportunities to influence meaningful change as our H&S Management System continues to mature.

  • Provide practical HSW advice to leaders and project teams, helping integrate HSW into planning and delivery
  • Support the development and upkeep of HSW systems, procedures and risk assessments
  • Assist with incident investigations, corrective actions and the incident management process
  • Support and coach Health & Safety Representatives, Location Representatives and Wellbeing Champions
  • Help manage contractor/supplier HSW pre-qualification and performance monitoring
  • Support injury management and return-to-work programmes alongside our Occupational Health & Wellbeing team
  • Participate in audits, inspections and site visits, identifying improvement opportunities
  • Keep up to date with legislative changes and support WorkSafe liaison where required

Nā tōu rourou | What you’ll bring

  • A relevant HSW qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma or equivalent)
  • 2–5 years’ experience in a similar HSW advisory role (construction, environmental or engineering sectors preferred)
  • Working knowledge of NZ/Australian HSW legislation, Codes of Practice, and ISO 45001 principles
  • Investigation and audit experience (ICAM training desirable)
  • Confidence completing risk assessments (Bowtie experience desirable)
  • Exposure to Just Culture and/or Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) approaches
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to influence at all levels
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Great organisation and time management
  • A continuous improvement mindset—focused on coaching and enabling others
  • Full NZ driver’s licence
