About the role

Company Description Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic provides legal representation and advice to individuals in the Okanagan Thompson area, with a particular focus on equitable access to justice. The clinic’s team includes two lawyers, family law advocates, and poverty law advocates who work collaboratively to support clients facing a range of legal challenges. Services cover employment, human rights, income security, limited family law, debt, judicial reviews, and housing matters. The clinic is community-oriented and client-centered, supporting people with complex legal and social issues through appointments booked by phone or email. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Lawyer role based in Kamloops, BC. The Lawyer will provide legal advice and representation in areas such as employment, human rights, income security, limited family law, debt, judicial reviews, and housing. Day-to-day tasks include meeting with clients, conducting legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, negotiating settlements, and representing clients before tribunals and courts, as appropriate. The Lawyer will collaborate with family law and poverty law advocates, participate in case strategy discussions, and support community outreach and public legal education initiatives. The role also includes maintaining accurate files, ensuring compliance with professional and ethical standards, and contributing to a respectful and inclusive workplace. Qualifications Licensed lawyer in good standing with the relevant law society, with experience or strong interest in employment, human rights, income security, family law, debt, judicial review, or housing matters. Strong legal research and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret legislation, case law, and administrative decisions. Proficiency in drafting pleadings, affidavits, legal opinions, correspondence, and other legal documents with clear and precise written communication. Client-centered advocacy skills, including interviewing, counseling, negotiation, and representation before courts or tribunals. Ability to work collaboratively with advocates and colleagues in a multidisciplinary environment, and to manage a varied caseload with sound judgment and time management. Commitment to access to justice, equity, and trauma-informed, culturally safe practice with individuals facing poverty, discrimination, or systemic barriers. Familiarity with community resources and social support systems in British Columbia is an asset. Experience in legal aid, community legal clinics, or public interest law is an asset; additional language skills are beneficial.
