About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Commercial Property Accountant to join a growing finance team. This role is responsible for the full-cycle accounting of a portfolio of commercial properties, ensuring accurate financial reporting, tenant accounting, and month-end close activities. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, thrives in a deadline-driven environment, and enjoys partnering with property management and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Month-End
Perform full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of commercial properties. Prepare and post journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger adjustments. Complete month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes within established deadlines. Prepare monthly financial statements, reporting packages, and variance analyses. Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, tenant receivables, and intercompany transactions. Review financial activity, investigate discrepancies, and resolve variances. Monitor capital expenditures and ensure appropriate capitalization and accounting treatment. Work closely with property management teams to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Tenant Accounting & Accounts Receivable
Manage tenant billings, rent collections, operating cost recoveries, and cash applications. Reconcile tenant accounts and investigate billing discrepancies. Follow up on outstanding receivables and assist with tenant account inquiries.
Accounts Payable
Process vendor invoices and payments while ensuring proper coding and approvals. Reconcile vendor accounts and maintain accurate supplier records. Support payment processing in accordance with company policies and internal controls.
Budgeting & Analysis
Assist with the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets. Analyze budget-to-actual results and provide explanations for significant variances. Support forecasting and other financial planning activities.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement
Assist with year-end audits, tax reporting, and preparation of supporting working papers. Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and company policies. Participate in process improvements, system enhancements, and other finance projects as required.
Qualifications
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 2+ years of accounting experience, ideally within commercial real estate or property management. Experience with commercial property accounting principles, including tenant accounting and recoveries. Experience using Yardi Voyager or another property management/accounting ERP is considered a strong asset. Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across finance and operations teams.
