Position Summary :

The Operating Room (OR) Attendant, an unregulated care provider, offers direct and indirect support for patient care activities. OR Attendants are accountable to assist and support other members of the health care team in the provision of patient care. Those in this role are responsible to support patient safety, such as infection control and prevention initiatives as well as ensure needed resources are available to support patient care needs in accordance with CSAO and the Operating Room Nursing Association of Canada (ORNAC) Standards. The role is accountable and responsible to assist and support other members of the health care team in the provision of safe patient care. Attendants will also support a clean environment through infection prevention and control (IPAC) standards, processes and initiatives and ensure necessary resources are available to support patient care needs.

In addition, the OR Attendant will perform and serve in a professional and collaborative environment, where the OR team is interactive, supportive, and committed to excellence and quality patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Lift patients onto Operating Room table and assist in positioning. Other patient care activities include, but are not limited to, assisting/supervision during ambulation; checks with nursing unit staff for direction on whether patient’s condition allows for safe transport i.e., accompaniment required.
  • Adheres to safe body mechanics and patient transfer guidelines.
  • Transporting patients to and from OR/CVOR and assisting with patient care.
  • Adapt communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers, and others within our health care community.
  • Extensive cleaning and housekeeping duties.
  • Practices infection control, environmental standards, and precautions to promote safe and clean work environment, which includes ensuring that daily cleaning standards are met. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment and environment (i.e., wheelchairs between each patient use, bays, isolation rooms, etc.).
  • Prepare the operating room before procedures ensuring that all required equipment and supplies are readily available.
  • Demonstrate values and a commitment to foster a healthy, supportive work environment dedicated to delivering a high-quality care experience though compassion, innovation, and respect.
  • Effectively apply organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload, to problem solve, and to adapt to frequent interruptions and change.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience as an OR Attendant, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Current, up to date CPR Certification.
  • Must be able to fulfill lifting requirements and the physical demands of the position
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and produce satisfactory results with minimal supervision.
  • Successfully able to perform their function in accordance with prescribed standards that focuses on the priority of People Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care.
  • Demonstrate the physical and mental capabilities necessary for proper and efficient performance of the essential duties of the position.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Knowledge of common duties and practices performed by an operating room attendant, including pre-, intra-, and post-operative procedures, equipment sterilization, administrative procedures, and basic sciences.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment e.g., wheelchairs between each patient use.
