######GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
Reporting to the CFO, the Accounting Summer Student Accounting & Business Analytics will support Accounting, Finance, Operations and IT teams, as well as Business Analytics with core financial processes, operational analysis, and management reporting. This role is designed to provide hands on experience including financial reporting, management accounting, internal controls, and data analysis within a manufacturing and operations environment. Will also support and cross-train with other members of the accounting team and any other related assigned projects.
Key Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Financial & Management Accounting
- Assist with routine accounting activities, including A/P and A/R support, general ledger data entry and account reconciliations
- Support month‑end and period‑end close processes by preparing supporting schedules and working papers, assisting with variance and trend analysis, and supporting inventory and cost accounting reconciliations
- Help maintain accurate documentation in support of internal controls and audit requirements
Operations & Cost Accounting Support
- Work with accounting and operations to analyze production, inventory, and labor data
- Assist with inventory counts and reconciliation processes
- Support cost tracking, standard costing, and operational performance analysis
- Assist in identifying process improvement opportunities within accounting and operational workflows
Business Analytics and Reporting
- Prepare and maintain financial and operational reports using Excel
- Assist with KPI tracking and dashboard support
- Analyze financial and operational data to support cost control, efficiency improvements, management decision making
- Summarize findings and assist in preparing materials for management review
- All other duties and projects as assignedAll other duties and projects as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge and interest of accounting principles and practices, financial reporting, cost accounting, and analytics
- A self-starter that can work independently although able to work with internal teams as needed
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize
- A high level of independence, accountability, teamwork, and attention to detail/accuracy in a fast-paced & rapidly changing environment
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, data analysis)
- Analytical and critical thinking mindset
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities
- Strong ethical standards and confidentiality awareness
- Exposure to accounting or ERP systems is an asset (e.g., Business Central or similar)
- Communicates clearly, accurately, and consistently both verbally and written with a friendly and helpful demeanour
Educational/Experience Requirements:
- Working towards a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
- Currently enrolled in a CPA eligible post-secondary program in accounting, finance, or business administration, completion of intermediate financial accounting courses is an asset
- Intention to pursue the CPA designation is required
- Some prior experience directly related to accounting or a general understanding of accounting or accounts payable best practices, procedures, and regulations preferred
- Prior exposure to a manufacturing environment considered an asset
- Previous experience using Dynamics 365 Business Central is an asset
CPA Relevant Experience Gained
- Financial reporting and working paper preparation
- Exposure to internal controls and accounting documentation
- Cost and management accounting in a manufacturing environment
- Data analysis and performance measurement
- Practical experience supporting month-end close activities
