About the role

Job Summary Reporting to the Program Manager, the registered nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of safe, effective, family centered nursing care to childbearing women and their families. In collaboration with the patient, family and other team members, the registered nurse is responsible for ongoing assessment and monitoring of the patient’s health status, identification of patient/family needs and the development of plans to meet those needs, the provision of direct patient care and the evaluation of care. The registered nurse participates in the ongoing professional development of self and others, and in unit and hospital wide quality improvement initiatives. The registered nurse is responsible for the application of current theory and research in the delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations. The registered nurse complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • Recent Family Birthing Centre experience - preferred
  • 2 years or 3,000 hours of recent (within last 4 years) medical/surgical experience – preferred
  • Completion of post-basic maternity nursing course - preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and support breastfeeding
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving ability
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to family centered maternity care and team based decision making
  • Ability to communicate in French - asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal professional development and ongoing education
  • General good health and a level of fitness appropriate for the demands of the position
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment

Education/Training Experience

  • Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario - required
  • Current BCLS – required
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (8 hours) – required
  • Current Fetal Monitoring Program (8 hours) – required
