Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.
Position Overview
The Security Guard is accountable for maintaining a safe and secure environment for guests and employees by enforcing security policies and procedures within Spark. The Security Guard reports directly to the Supervisor, Security. Please note: This is a part-time position with up to full time hours. The successful candidate will be required to work Saturdays and Sundays.
- Security & Safety Management:
o Respond promptly to security and safety incidents, taking charge as necessary to calm, enforce, and protect as required.
o Conduct regular foot patrols of both the interior and exterior of the Science Centre property, ensuring all areas are secure. Open doors or lock doors upon request.
o Monitor parking lots and equipment, reporting any irregularities or safety hazards.
o Act as Chief Fire Warden, leading fire drills and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations.
o Provide first aid to guests, staff, and volunteers as needed, maintaining current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certifications.
o Respond to emergencies, coordinating with other staff and emergency services as necessary.
o Conduct monthly life safety equipment inspections such as first aid kids, AEDs, and fire extinguishers etc.
- Shipping/Receiving Operations:
o Receive, unload, and process deliveries, ensuring accuracy and condition of incoming shipments. Check for damage or tampering.
o Store incoming packages in specified areas for easy identification and retrieval and deliver merchandise to the appropriate department or contact department for pickup.
o Loading dock management, maintain a clear and safe loading dock area, ensure only authorized personnel have access. Supervise the unloading process to handle packages safely and place them in designated areas.
o Secure the receiving room and its contents, ensuring safekeeping of packages.
o Ship all outgoing mail and packages, verifying quantity and condition upon receipt prior to delivery.
o Obtain signatures from recipients upon delivery of packages and mail. Accurately log all incoming and outgoing shipments, including tracking numbers and delivery times. Immediately notify supervisors of any missing or damaged items.
- Surveillance & Patrols:
o Monitor surveillance cameras and access control systems, reporting any suspicious activity.
o Conduct perimeter patrols to ensure the safety and security of the premises.
- Guest Interaction & Customer Service:
o Serve as a front-line ambassador by greeting and interacting with Spark guests, providing wayfinding, general information, and other assistance.
o Model high performance, flexibility, and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.
- Incident Reporting & Documentation:
o Conduct witness interviews as required to gather detailed information for accurate incident reporting.
o Ensure all activities align with the business and strategic goals of Spark.
Qualifications & Knowledge

A minimum of 1 year of experience or expertise in the security field.

Experience in the security and safety of property and people.
-
Knowledge of applicable local, provincial and federal laws relating to security.
-
Knowledge of security practices, methods and strategies.
-
Proficient with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
-
Previous experience with surveillance camera and card access systems preferred.
-
Must Hold a valid Alberta Security License, and maintain licensing as required under the Alberta Security Services and Investigations Act. Must also hold ProServe, and ProTect.

Must have Standard First and CPR level C.

Strong ethics and ability to manage confidential data if required.
