The hospital is over 225 beds, sees over 50,000 emergency room patients per year and runs seven acute operating rooms daily as well as a minor procedure room, a busy rehab clinic and an ambulatory procedure centre. The medical community is collegial and supportive with excellent relationships between departments as well as between community family physicians and specialists. Due to its proximity to the Vancouver airport, the hospital, the hospital also provides services to visitors traveling to and from YVR.

Richmond is located on Lulu Island at the mouth of the Fraser River, and also encompasses adjacent Sea Island and some smaller uninhabited islets to the north and south. Neighbouring communities are Vancouver and Burnaby to the north, New Westminster to the east, and Delta to the south. The Strait of Georgia forms its western border. It is the fourth largest city in BC and encompasses diverse neighbourhoods from historic Steveston to the agricultural land reserves. The population of 218,000 is one of the most ethnically diverse in Canada.

Richmond is the fourth most populous and fast‑growing municipality in Metro Vancouver. To meet the growing demand for healthcare services, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is ensuring we plan for the future. Richmond Hospital is undergoing plans for a campus‑wide expansion and renewal. As announced in July 2020 by the Premier and Minister of Health, the aim is to build a new acute‑care tower. Incorporating modernised healthcare design principles, the new facility provides increased inpatient‑care beds, peri‑operative services, medical imaging and emergency services to support quality patient care and staff wellness and safety. Detailed planning is currently and a project completion target of 2029.

Richmond requires an Anesthesiologist to support the expansion of daily Operating Room time throughout the week. The hospital maintains obstetric, general surgery, ENT, orthopaedic, urologic and vascular elective and emergency programmes.
