As a Network Technician you will ensure that infrastructure is installed, tested, secured and maintains in accordance with corporate architecture standards and procedures. Primary duties include:

  • Install and terminate fibre optic and copper communication cables.
  • Produce as-built drawings of new and exiting installations.
  • Enter fibre optic and shallow utility infrastructure into General Electric (GE) Smallworld asset management software.
  • Create, test and troubleshoot Fibre alignments, generate reports and label accordingly.
  • Participate in evaluating and deploying fibre optic and copper transmission technologies.
  • Provide network maintenance and support, including vendor management and contract administration, problem resolution, reporting and routine maintenance.

Qualifications

  • A completed 2 year diploma in Telecommunications, Electronics, Networking, Engineering or a related field with at least 3 years of experience including fibre optic cabling installation, testing, troubleshooting, and/or shallow utility experience.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Experience working in a support role within a complex data network environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with construction practices, health and safety protocols, wired and wireless networks (including network management and analysis tools, routing protocols, and network equipment such as switches, routers, and firewalls) will also be considered assets.
  • You have excellent technical, analytical, planning and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as an effective team member.

Working Conditions: You will be required to work in a variety of conditions including confined spaces such as manholes and pullboxes. Work may involve awkward positions requiring coordination of movement and heavy lifting.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Workstyle

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Compensation: Pay Grade 9 $41.49 - 55.51 per hour

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.

Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
