About the role
Custodians at YWCA Calgary are responsible for maintaining YW property to acceptable standards of cleanliness, ensuring that facilities and surrounding areas are welcoming, clean, and safe for all users. As part of a dynamic team, the successful candidate will perform basic maintenance and day-to-day janitorial duties, while adhering to YWCA policies, procedures, and applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
This is a full‑time position with a scheduled workweek of Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Monday through Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- The role involves regular physical activity, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, rotating, and walking, as well as standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks
- Clean, maintain, and ensure overall hygiene of specified spaces at YW
- Ensure that all safety standards are met
- Proactively identify and notify your supervisor of areas that require attention or maintenance
- Report unsafe work practices, hazards, or incidents immediately in accordance with YW’s incident reporting requirements to help ensure proactive risk mitigation and management in compliance with legislative requirements (Occupational Health & Safety, Workers’ Compensation Board, etc.)
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety materials, devices, and tools to safely perform the work
- Maintain and correctly use janitorial equipment
- Participate in YW meetings as required
- Engage and participate in learning, training, and certification opportunities
- Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace environment
- Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles to your role, how you work and how you engage with others, as aligned with YW Calgary’s values and Practice Framework
- Share individual accountability to create and maintain inclusive and safe spaces and practices (physically and psychologically) that are open, transparent, and encourage accountability, advocacy, and mentorship
- Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment to YW’s culture
- Actively participate in the implementation of the National Standard for Psychological Health & Safety and integrate into all work practices and interactions with colleagues
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Strong customer service skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively speak, read and write in English
- Ability to positively contribute to the team and work collaboratively
- Takes initiative, demonstrates adaptability, and responds well to change in a dynamic work environment
- Experience maintaining and operating cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, Kaivac machine, and vacuum cleaners).
- Strong knowledge of the safe use and application of cleaning chemicals and products
- Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft 360 applications
- Successful completion of First Aid training within three to six months
- WHMIS certification
