As a Strategist, Communications within our Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Department, you will be responsible for envisioning, building and leading interdisciplinary teams in the creation and execution of internal and external communications. Through strategic consultation, the Strategist-Communications develops and implements communication strategies and provides communications expertise and strategic advice to various departments within Peel Regional Police. This includes the analyzing of digital analytics from various scanning tools to identify opportunities to improve community engagement, organizational brand, reputation and strategic priorities.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Collaborates with clients, external agencies, partners and media outlets. Interprets and defines internal and external communication needs; provides expert communications and editorial advice to identify and target audiences to determine message development and delivery vehicles.
  • Develops and implements communication plans that meet the client’s needs and support the Strategic Plan and its objectives. Identifies risks and refines client objectives by proposing tailored and specialized communication strategies.
  • Responds to inquiries from employees, senior management, the public and external agencies regarding corporate services and programs, special events and strategic priorities.
  • Develops communications strategies and tactical support by gathering, writing and coordinating photographs, videos and text material for a variety of communication mediums including internal communications tools as well as external publications, brochures, pamphlets and programs produced by Corporate Communications.
  • Manages the execution of marketing calendars to ensure target goals and dates are met. Regularly measures campaign performance and trends to report against objectives and uncover opportunities on social media.
  • Interacts with PRP social media accounts by writing social posts for specific channels, using best practices for high value content to achieve engagement with the public and creating better brand awareness.
  • Mitigates risk to the PRP brand by identifying issues and providing strategic advice and recommendations.
  • Creates, recommends, implements and maintains tracking tools to help team members and key stakeholders understand the processes and timelines of projects.
  • Gathers, analyzes and detects threats to the brand and opportunities to avoid harm to the reputation by authoring presentations to Chief’s Management Group and other key stakeholders. Liaises with Advisory Councils, providing regular info sessions and representing the organization with regular presentations.
  • Acts as authority on communications strategy, social media best practices and communications tactics by providing in-person training and developing training materials.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Enough about us, lets talk about you

You are someone with:

  • A University Degree in Communications, Digital Marketing, Journalism, English or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. International Association of Business Communicators Accreditation, CPRS or equivalent certification preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Journalism, Digital Media or Communications and in interpreting data from social media platforms.
  • Working knowledge of social and traditional media scanning tools and platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communications principles.
  • Demonstrated intermediate knowledge of related computer applications pertinent to the function.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large scale communication campaigns.
  • Demonstrated editorial and/or newsroom experience.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative environment to gather information from across the organization and generate communications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence (Class G) with full driving privileges.

What we offer

The salary range for this permanent, full-time position is $71,653.00 - $120,727.00 per annum. Peel Regional Police offers a highly competitive compensation package; applicants will be considered for the top end of the range ($98,996.00 - $120,727.00) based on experience. The salary is complemented with a comprehensive benefit program, including employer-paid Health/Dental and Life Insurance; and the OMERS Pension Plan effective upon hire.
