Peace River School Division is seeking a Full-Time (1.0 f.t.e) innovative and passionate trades professional to join our growing Collegiate Trades Program. This is a unique opportunity to help build an exciting program from the ground up, creating meaningful pathways for students into apprenticeships, post-secondary education, and rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Working in collaboration with school administrators, industry partners, post-secondary institutions, and certified journeypersons, the successful candidate will help develop and deliver engaging programming that introduces junior and senior high students to the Heavy Duty Technician trade through classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and authentic workplace experiences.

Position Summary

The Instructor, Collegiate Trades Program – Heavy Duty Technician is responsible for developing and delivering high-quality introductory trades instruction while helping establish and grow Peace River School Division's Collegiate Trades Program. The successful candidate will foster student engagement through practical, hands-on learning experiences that develop technical knowledge, workplace safety, problem-solving skills, and career readiness.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the future of career and technical education by helping design curriculum, build industry partnerships, and create learning experiences that prepare students for employment, apprenticeships, and post-secondary education.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and deliver engaging classroom and shop-based instruction for junior and senior high school students. Deliver Alberta-approved Air Brake (Q Endorsement) training, including classroom instruction, practical training, student evaluation, and certification requirements in accordance with provincial standards. Assist in designing, implementing, and continuously improving the Collegiate Trades Program. Develop introductory mechanics and Heavy Duty Technician learning experiences aligned with Alberta Education CTS curriculum. Create practical learning opportunities that develop foundational trade skills, safe work practices, and technical competencies. Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, assessments, and student learning activities. Monitor student progress and provide timely feedback and support. Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that reflects industry expectations. Supervise students during shop activities, field experiences, and work-integrated learning opportunities. Collaborate with PRSD schools, administrators, teachers, Learning Services, and Collegiate Program staff to support student success. Build and maintain strong relationships with employers, industry partners, apprenticeship organizations, and post-secondary institutions. Contribute to the future development of programming that may support first-year apprenticeship recognition and industry-recognized credentials. Maintain equipment, tools, and shop facilities while ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.

Skills & Qualifications

An Interprovincial Red Seal Trades Designation in either the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician or Heavy Duty Mechanic Minimum five years of industry experience as a Journeyperson Experience teaching, coaching, or facilitating adult or youth learning is an asset Strong computer skills with the ability to utilize educational technology Experience mentoring apprentices, employees, or students is considered an asset. Class 1 License or the willingness to obtain Class 1 License and Instructor license Air Brakes instructor Certification or the ability to obtain certification prior to delivery of Air Brakes instruction Commitment to supporting Indigenous education and building respectful relationships with local First Nation, Metis and Inuit communities.
