About the role
Established in 1917, the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia (WorkSafeBC) is an independent statutory agency responsible for administering the Workers Compensation Act for the British Columbia Ministry of Labour. To realize its vision of keeping British Columbians free from workplace injury, disease, and death. WorkSafeBC has the legal authority to set and enforce occupational health and safety standards, assist injured or disabled workers, assess employers and collect contributions to fund its operation. WorkSafeBC partners with workers and employers to promote the prevention of workplace injury and to offer compensation and support to workers in their recovery, rehabilitation, and safe return to work. It provides coverage to over 2.4 million workers and more than 245,000 registered employers throughout BC.
WorksafeBC is now seeking a new Director, OHS Investigations. Reporting to the Vice President of Prevention Services and overseeing a multi-disciplinary team of 55 investigators and support staff, the Director, OHS Investigations, has the responsibility for determining the OHS Investigations department’s strategic direction with respect to promoting workplace health and safety. This includes the investigation and reporting of findings for fatal, serious, and near miss incidents and ensuring the integrity of all investigations including those undertaken for regulatory prosecution under the Workers’ Compensation Act. The incumbent is responsible for initiatives and strategies that optimize the delivery of the division’s legal investigative mandate and obligations, ensuring the sound and effective management of those services.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary people leader and thought leader with a proven track record of driving change within their organizations. This experience could have been gained in environments such as:
- In a similar investigations/compliance role within an enforcement/regulatory organization OR
- As a senior OH&S leader in a large, complex organization with significant health and safety considerations.
The Director will bring exceptional judgment, strong stakeholder management skills, business acumen, and a solutions-focused, results-oriented approach. A highly strategic and nuanced mindset will be essential, along with the ability to navigate political dynamics and to anticipate the potential impacts of decisions. WorksafeBC is seeking an experienced change leader to lead the continued evolution of the organization’s approach to investigations. This includes evaluating how cases are prioritized, how findings are presented, how the function collaborates and integrates with other teams in Prevention Services and across the organization, and how investigations are delivering insights, analysis, and recommendations to prevent future incidents.
