As Manager - Instrumentation & Controls, you will play a pivotal role in leading complex engineering efforts for test facilities with a strong emphasis on safety, regulatory compliance, and innovation. About the Role
As Manager of our I&C department, you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the design, development, and deployment of sophisticated data acquisition and control systems across our global portfolio. Your role is not only to ensure technical delivery, but to build a team that thrives through collaboration, ownership, and purpose. What You’ll Be Doing
Leadership & Strategic Vision
- Lead with a servant-leader mindset, enabling engineers and technologists to perform at their best.
- Foster a culture of trust, shared accountability, and team empowerment.
- Develop a long-term departmental strategy focused on capability growth, innovation, and succession planning.
- Serve as a coach and mentor, developing the next generation of technical leader
- Act as the escalation point for technical and delivery issues within I&C projects.
- Encourage and challenge the engineering team to drive “fit for purpose” solutions while being fully compliant with applicable codes and standards.
- Communicates and enforces organizational priorities and goals
- Demonstrate critical thinking and technical problem solving
- Demonstrate flexible thinking, ability to pivot when change in organization priority occurs
Project & Resource Oversight
- Ensure efficient resource planning across multiple concurrent, high-value projects.
- Act as a key partner to Project Managers and other departments, aligning on schedules, budgets, and outcomes.
- Support proposal development with conceptual designs, estimates, and strategic guidance.
Culture & Talent Development
- Conduct regular coaching, performance reviews, and personalized development planning.
- Promote curiosity, emotional intelligence, and lifelong learning.
- Lead recruitment efforts to build and diversify team capacity.
- Facilitate cross-functional learning and collaboration across departments.
Vision & Legacy
- Contribute to the long-term direction of MDS by shaping the future of I&C systems.
- Build a legacy defined by both technical achievements and the development of exceptional people.
Who We’re Looking For
- 8–10 years of experience in instrumentation, control systems, and data acquisition.
- 5+ years of experience in managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (or eligibility) is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
- Technical depth in: Custom DAQ systems, PLCs, control system integration and electrical design.
- Experience in gas turbine testing or other high-complexity environments preferred.
- Strong communicator with high emotional intelligence.
- Calm, steady problem-solver in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to balance competing priorities
- Experience overseeing work that adheres to external technical standards and regulations
