Maintenance Labourer**(Casual On-Call)**
The District of Sparwood has an excellent employment opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join the Community Services team in the role of Casual, On-Call Labourer with our Maintenance team. Reporting to the Recreation Maintenance Supervisor, the Casual, On-Call Labourer provides support to the maintenance team by performing a variety of tasks related to the cleaning and maintenance of the District Leisure Services buildings, arena, parks, playgrounds and other facilities.
The core job duties include:

Providing custodial and maintenance services within, but not limited to, the Leisure Centre Complex

Assisting with the set up and take down of furniture and equipment for facility events
-
Supporting Park inspections, cleaning, repairs and maintenance
-
Operating District equipment as trained and in a safe manner including but not limited to trucks, tractors, mowers, ice resurfacer, etc.

Provides exemplary customer service, including supervision of the arena complex and ice surface during events and activities
The ideal candidate will have:

Minimum Grade 12 diploma, GED or equivalent
-
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
-
Current Basic First Aid & WHIMIS certification
-
Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate or Higher Certification
-
Basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical and maintenance skills and knowledge
-
Demonstrable customer service skills and conflict resolution
-
Ability to perform custodial services with a high degree of care and diligence
-
Has the ability to work well both independently and as part of a collaborative team
-
Physical ability to lift heavy objects, undertake intensive labour tasks, work in awkward positions and confined spaces, frequently stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather
**Hours of work:**This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours. Scheduled hours may vary greatly depending on operational needs between 0-40 hours per week. Shifts can range in length and can include early mornings, evenings and weekends. This is a great position for those looking for a flexible schedule, to supplement other income, and/or gain valuable experience in recreation and building maintenance!
Salary:This position is unionized under CUPE local 2698. The 2026 hourly wage rate is$30.75/houras per the current Collective Agreement.

Job Description
Reporting to the Chief Facility Maintenance Operator, the Casual Labourer performs a variety of tasks related to the cleaning and maintenance of the District Leisure Services buildings, parks, playgrounds, arena and other facilities. The incumbent provides custodial services, removes garbage, sets up and takes down events, assists in the installation of ice surfaces, maintenance of parks, fields, landscaping, snow removal, operates small trucks, cleaning equipment, power and hand tools, snow blowers and ice resurfacer etc. The Casual Labourer fills in or provides additional support for the maintenance team as needed and determined by the District of Sparwood.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects and provides custodial services within, but not limited to, the Leisure Centre Complex

Assists with and conducts park inspections and maintenance
-
Clears snow around the leisure center and adjoining sidewalks and parking areas
-
Inspects, repairs, cleans and maintains playground and park equipment
-
Assists with the daily inspection of the ice plant, leisure complex heating systems, pool filtration systems and other equipment, maintains associated maintenance logs and records as required
-
Erects and dismantles staging and other temporary equipment in parks and recreational facilities
-
Moves and sets up and takes down tables, chairs and other furniture and presentation items for functions in the facilities
-
Operates District equipment as trained and in a safe manner including but not limited to trucks, tractors, mowers, ice resurfacer, etc.

Provides supervision of the arena complex and ice surface during event and activities, as assigned

Provides exemplary customer service

Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education / Work Experience
