We are seeking a Director, Finance & Accounting to join our team. This position will report directly to the CSO as well as indirectly to the senior leadership team as needed.

Please note that this role is based at the HumanBranding Home Office located at 582 Richmond Street West, Toronto, ON M5V 1Y9.

The firm offers a hybrid work arrangement with Tuesdays and Wednesdays being in-office days, plus the first Monday of each month to align with all staffing meetings.

The Director of Finance and Accounting plays a pivotal leadership role, guiding all aspects of financial management, strategy, and operations while partnering with our leadership team to drive sustainable growth and impact. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and possess exceptional communication and leadership skills, with a strong background in financial planning, reporting, and business process optimization.

As a pivotal member of the management team, the Director of Finance and Accounting has clear opportunities for career advancement. High-performing individuals may progress to senior executive roles such as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO) as the firm grows and evolves.

Compensation:

Competitive salary commensurate with experience ($150,000 - $180,000 per annum).

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the firm’s goals and objectives.
  • Act as a strategic partner to the executive team, providing financial analysis and recommendations to support business initiatives, investments, and operational improvements.
  • Prepare short- and long-term financial forecasts, budgets, and business plans, ensuring alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Monitor financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions as needed, and minimizing the impact of variances.

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) or other relevant standards.
  • Review, refine, and document accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing professional development opportunities and fostering a high-performance culture.

Cash Flow & Treasury Management

  • Manage the firm’s cash flow, banking relationships, and cash management activities to optimize liquidity and financial stability.
  • Oversee billing, collections, and credit policies to ensure timely cash receipts and manage working capital effectively.
  • Coordinate with external financial institutions for any financing needs, including lines of credit, loans, and investment opportunities.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Develop key financial metrics, dashboards, and performance indicators to monitor business health and guide decision-making.
  • Conduct variance analysis, identify trends, and recommend actions for improvement.
  • Compliance, Audit, and Risk Management.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state/provincial, and local regulations, tax laws, and industry standards.
  • Coordinate and manage annual financial audits, liaising with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Implement and monitor risk management strategies, including insurance coverage, contractual obligations, and fraud prevention measures.

Process Improvement & Technology

  • Evaluate and implement accounting and financial management systems to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within the finance and accounting functions.
  • Stay current with best practices, technology trends, and regulatory changes impacting the industry.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with other department heads (e.g., HR, operations, IT) to align financial management with organizational initiatives.
  • Promote financial literacy and awareness throughout the organization.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (master’s degree is highly desirable).
  • A CPA designation is required.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, with at least 3 years in a management or leadership capacity.
  • Experience in professional services, consulting, or related industries is strongly preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite).
  • Proficiency in advanced MS Office and Excel skills is a must-have.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • High ethical standards, integrity, and a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and effective people management capabilities; supportive of team development through coaching, mentoring, and creating growth opportunities.
