About the role

We are seeking a qualified and dedicated individual to fill this position for up to eighteen (18) months on a temporary basis. We are seeking an organized problem solver with a positive attitude to support and assist in the management of Health, Safety and Environment for Canadian Niagara Power and FortisOntario affiliates as required. This role will work out of our Canadian Niagara Power location, and report to the Manager, Health, Safety, & Environment.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for the resolution of Health, Safety and Environmental concerns and issues that arise within the organization through incident investigations, employee concerns, observations, inspections, audits and the HSEMS program.

  • Provide support to HSE team and manager of Health, Safety and Environment in the development of new and expanding HS&E programs by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of HS&E policies procedures, programs, performance.

  • Promote a strong culture of safety compliance and awareness at all levels of the organization and will facilitate ongoing training and communications pertaining to all HS&E information and any legislative changes that may affect FortisOntario.

  • Participate in external Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems Conformance Audits and Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance Audits are carried out as per the HSEMS.

  • Participation in the company’s Joint Health and Safety Committee as required.

  • Assist in coordination efforts to develop, implement and maintain the company’s Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) program and ensure that documentation, with respect to HSEMS, is maintained and consistent with ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards.

  • Ensure legislative compliance by monitoring and keeping current on rapidly evolving HS&E legislation affecting FortisOntario.

  • With the support of the HSE team, liaise with legislative bodies and other agencies associated with HS&E, including but not limited to MOL, MOE, IHSA, Fire Department, CSSE, EDA, ESA, TSSA, MTCU, MTO, WSIB, CEA and AEUSP. Correspond with other HS&E personnel from other Fortis facilities. Support official reporting requirements and routine documentation.

  • Immediately and effectively respond to HS&E emergency situations that may occur from time to time to help mitigate personal injury, death, or damage to environment or property.

  • With the support of the HSE team, oversee incident investigations to ensure that casual analysis is satisfactory. Monitor corrective actions to ensure that all recommendations arising from investigations are addressed in a timely manner.

  • Monitor HS&E performance by preparing, administering, and maintaining HS&E programs, records, and software programs.

  • Assess HS&E training needs to develop criteria for training that are both required and desirable. Organize and schedule annual, new employee/transferred and supervisor training programs for all employees at all levels.

  • Assist in monitoring budget expenditures for the HSE department.

  • Inspect company facilities, including job sites in the field, to assess workplace hazards and suggest recommendations to reduce the risk of loss from injury, property damage and the environment.

  • Possible travel to other FortisOntario locations.

  • With the support of the HSE team, assess office workplace stations for ergonomic needs and provide support to identified modifications or purchasing of ergonomically designed apparatuses.

  • Provide support for HS&E equipment to ensure the regulated criteria is met.

  • Provide support for emergency equipment and audit facilities for compliance to the fire code and recommend solutions to ensure compliance.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Managerial Support:

  • Collaborate with supervisors/managers to develop and facilitate HS&E training needs.
  • Provide Health, safety and Environment guidance to all employees in conjunction with the support of all management and supervisory personnel**.**
  • Coach employees to facilitate the adoption of legislation requirements into operations.
  • Coach and oversee the Joint Health & Safety Committee’s and other informal HS&E teams.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Knowledge and experience in the field of Health, Safety and the Environment; a minimum of three (3) years would be an asset.
  • Completion of or working toward a Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CSRT) and/or Canadian Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
  • Completion of or working towards post-secondary education in Health, Safety and Environment or equivalent.
  • Experience with ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 Standards would be an asset
