Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies.

JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Director provides operational leadership and management of the daily functions of the Student Transportation department for Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS).
The role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services by managing route planning, optimization, and scheduling, overseeing staff and contractors, monitoring budgets, and supporting stakeholder communication. The Assistant Director assists with the integration of transportation technology and student data, supervises key personnel, and ensures transportation operations comply with EIPS policies, provincial legislation, and Alberta Education requirements.
The Assistant Director also acts on behalf of the Director in their absence, supports investigations and complaint resolution, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives within Student Transportation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Route/Software/Data Management
- Lead the planning, optimization, and continuous improvement of transportation routes, ensuring alignment with safety standards, legislation, and budget requirements.
- Maintain district mapping and boundaries and support boundary adjustments in growth areas.
- Design and optimize bus routes within budget, policy, and legislative requirements.
- Make operational decisions impacting service delivery, safety, and efficiency.
- Determine appropriate response and resource allocation during emergent situations.
- Recommend operational improvements, policy updates, and service adjustments to the Director.
- Measure service performance and implement improvements to meet district and legislative requirements.
- Ensure transportation software data integrity and compliance with Alberta Education funding requirements.
- Implement changes to transportation legislation and integrate relevant updates into operations.
- Maintain and coordinate student data integration between transportation systems and student information systems.
- Assess software or system malfunctions and liaise with Tech Services and vendors for resolution.
- Evaluate bus eligibility for students with special needs in collaboration with Supports for Students.
- Maintain and analyze statistical data on ridership, fees, school openings/closings, and related metrics.
- Provide routing and boundary planning analysis to the Director for board reports.
- Liaise with partner divisions regarding student data alignment and school calendars.
- Ensure staff are trained in routing software, best practices, and technology updates.
- Manage and oversee annual transportation database rollover.
- Support implementation of new transportation software modules or system enhancements.
- Collaborate with Safety and Compliance Supervisor on route changes and safety compliance.
- Act on behalf of the Director, including decision-making authority in their absence.
Supervision / Management
Provide direction, coaching, and performance management to staff, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and service standards.
Support workforce planning, training, and development to ensure operational continuity and capacity.
Supervise daily route operations, including transfer sites.
Provide leadership and supervision to Senior Planners, Transportation Coordinators, and Bus Operators.
- Conduct quarterly performance reviews for contracted bus operators.
- Assess school sites for traffic safety concerns in collaboration with Safety and Compliance Supervisor, Facilities, School Administrators, and County/City Officials.
- Manage Traversa software, including onboarding staff, providing training, troubleshooting, and developing supporting documentation and tutorials.
- Ensure staff performance aligns with department objectives and best practices.
Investigations, Complaints, and Discipline
- Manage investigations of complaints or concerns related to student transportation operations, including software issues.
- Collaborate with School Administrators on student and driver discipline matters.
- Ensure incidents are documented, analyzed, and corrective actions are implemented when required.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, safety standards, and division policies, and identify and mitigate operational risks.
Budget Management
- Monitor and analyze monthly contracted transportation expenditures and identify variances.
- Provide recommendations to the Director to support budget planning and cost control.
- Approve and submit monthly route-eligible distance for contract bus operator pay.
- Assist the Director in completing Alberta Education annual funding applications for Urban, Rural, and Special Education students.
- Support financial tracking and reporting to ensure alignment with departmental and divisional priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Minimum Required: Degree or diploma in a related field or equivalent experience.
- Preferred: Experience or training in public‑sector administration or K-12 operations.
Experience:

Minimum Required: 5-7 years of student
transportation experience. 3 years of supervisory experience.

Preferred: Experience working with senior management and/or within a school
division.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of transportation regulations, safety standards, and provincial legislation.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Proficiency with routing software, GPS systems, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and emerging technologies.
