SCOPE:

The Planning and Development Department is seeking a hardworking and self-motivated Arboriculture Development Technician to add to their team. You will be responsible for office and technical field work related to the administration of Surrey's Tree Protection By-law. This includes specialized technical work related to landscape architecture and arboriculture.

You will demonstrate knowledge of OCPs, NCPs and understand the development application process for single-family, multi-family, commercial and industrial projects. You will also demonstrate knowledge of BCLNA Landscape Standards, ISA best management practices, tree risk assessments and landscape construction methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review arborist reports and tree cutting permit applications.
  • Review landscape plans and landscape cost estimates
  • Calculate fees and securities required for tree cutting permits and landscape plans.
  • Make recommendations and decisions regarding landscape related risk and design.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The successful applicant will have the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Perform other job-related duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University Degree in either landscape architecture, forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of three years related experience.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
  • Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
  • Valid BC Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of arboriculture and hazard tree assessments.
  • Thorough knowledge of bylaws, legislations, OCPs, and NCPs related to the work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the development application process for single-family, multi-family, commercial and industrial projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of BCLNA Landscape Standards, ISA best management practices, tree risk assessments and landscape construction methods
  • Ability to read and interpret surveys, plans, drawings and reports related to the work.
  • Possesses excellent working knowledge of related computer programs including but not limited to MS Word, MS Outlook, AMANDA, and ArcView (Cosmo).
