About the Position
Châtelaine is one of Quebec’s most iconic media brands. Developed by and for Quebec women, it proudly celebrates their unique voices, culture, and creativity. With a rich heritage and a bright future ahead, Châtelaine is evolving to connect with a new generation of women in Quebec and around the world. We are looking for an Associate Editor-in-Chief.
Summary
As Deputy Editor-in-Chief, you will play a key role in shaping and maintaining the magazine’s editorial direction. The ideal candidate has strong journalism experience, excellent editorial judgment, and a deep sensitivity to human stories. They are highly interested in the evolving media and magazine industry and are skilled at creating content that lives across multiple platforms while exploring innovative formats. They are committed to producing content that is relevant, rigorous, and deeply engaging for today’s readers.
Responsibilities
- In partnership with the Editor-in-Chief, participate in key editorial decisions and ensure the execution of the magazine’s vision. Promote this vision daily within the team and ensure the quality, consistency, and relevance of all content.
- Oversee the planning and production of editorial content. Coordinate the work of writers, photographers, and other contributors to ensure efficient production and a cohesive, polished, and impactful presentation.
- Develop, write, and edit articles with a strong focus on narrative quality and depth of subject matter.
- Review and edit content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with the editorial direction. Provide constructive feedback to writers and contribute to continuous content improvement.
- Collaborate closely with design, photography, and art direction teams to ensure a cohesive, polished, and visually compelling presentation. Work with editorial and digital teams to deploy the editorial vision across all platforms, from print to web to social media, ensuring consistency and strength.
- Stay informed about current events and social conversations affecting women, and translate these into strong editorial ideas that reflect the cultural moment.
- Mentor and support junior editorial team members. Foster a collaborative, stimulating, and high-performing work environment where engagement and a passion for quality content go hand in hand.
- Contribute to managing the editorial budget, including freelancers, photo production, and content-related expenses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, literature, or a related field, or equivalent experience; a graduate degree is an asset
- Strong experience in editorial content (minimum 10 years), with a background rooted in journalism and comfort working in a magazine environment
- Excellent editorial judgment and a sharp sense of what makes a strong story at the right time
- Outstanding writing and editing skills, with attention to detail and the ability to adapt tone across subjects, formats, and assignments while delivering clear, rigorous, and engaging content
- Strong ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (editorial, design, digital) in a seamless and integrated approach
- Inclusive leadership style with the ability to rally a team around a shared editorial vision
- Strong interest in the media and magazine industry, particularly in multi-platform content
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to changing priorities
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
