About the role

Our Disability and Rehabilitation Services department is an in-house, self-insured and self-administered Plan that provides long-term disability benefits in a transparent, non-adversarial manner. We are seeking an experienced, relationship‑driven, and strategic leader to join us as Director, Disability and Rehabilitation Services. Reporting to the Vice President, Disability and Rehabilitation Plan Management, you will lead the Claims Administration; Claims Specialists; and Rehabilitation Services teams and ensure operations align with the organization’s strategic priorities and best practices for seamless and quality service delivery.

The Role

Operations & Strategy

Establish department goals, priorities, and operational standards, and ensure alignment with organizational strategy, and industry best practices. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, member service excellence, and consistent approach for department processes and documentation. Direct the development and execution of effective claims and rehabilitation strategies for complex cases to ensure optimal member outcomes. Develop LTD frameworks including eligibility guidelines and provide oversight to ensure plan provisions are appropriately applied and administered.

People & Team Development

Lead, coach, and develop the Claims Administration; Claims Specialists; and Rehabilitation Services teams’ managers. Foster an inclusive, high-performing culture that supports employee engagement, wellbeing, and professional development.

Stakeholder Relations & Education

Establish strong relationships with key stakeholders including but not limited to; participating employer facilities; unions; third-party service providers and other external partners. Oversee Disability & Rehabilitation related employer / facility training, education, surveys, audits and escalated issue resolution.

Quality Assurance, Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure all claims and appeals decisions comply with applicable legislation, contractual provisions, and timelines, including the management of complex cases and high-level exception requests. Design and oversee processes for the independent review of denied claims, ensuring thorough, objective reassessment and appropriate outcomes. Mitigate financial risk while ensuring fair and balanced plan administration. Oversee third-party providers to ensure service quality, appropriate utilization; effective performance management; and service agreement compliance. Lead third party evaluations; contract and reciprocal agreement negotiations; and provide ongoing performance and risk oversight. Lead quality assurance and audit activities for claims, systems and processes to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance. Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external legal counsel on legal matters, appeals, and litigation, representing the organization in legal proceedings as required.

Cross Department & Cross - Organizational Collaboration

Collaborate with cross-function partners to ensure alignment of priorities, processes, and timely, effective service delivery. As an active member of the organization’s leadership management team, collaborate on organizational strategies and key deliverables.

Qualifications for Your Success

Education & Experience

Completion of post-secondary degree in Management; Allied Health; Nursing, or another related field. A minimum of 10 years’ of progressively responsible experience with group LTD claims adjudication and rehabilitation including complex claims management. 5-8 or years’ experience in a people management capacity.

  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Knowledge & Skills

Expertise with LTD insurance; contract law; and policy interpretation to guide sound, fair and consistent decision making. Ability to think strategically with strong analytical and decision-making skill. Demonstrated expertise with negotiation, conflict resolution and stakeholder management in complex and sensitive situations. Proven track record with leading high performing teams through effective coaching, mentoring and development practices. Exceptional business communications skills including facilitation and presentation experience. Proven track record with building strong working relationships and a genuine commitment to service excellence. Adept at effectively managing competing priorities and driving results across multiple initiatives in a deadline driven environment. Commitment to continuous learning; professional and personal development. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft office.
