Job Description

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The McMaster Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE) is an exercise research and training Centre affiliated with the University's renowned Department of Kinesiology where our scientists, students, and staff are devoted to studying and improving health and well-being among older adults and people living with chronic disease or disability. PACE activities share the mission and vision of McMaster University and focus on the achievement and demonstration of excellence and leadership in research, education, community engagement, and knowledge translation. Research initiatives at PACE are supported by talented and internationally renowned faculty.

PACE is seeking a Registered Kinesiologist to provide clinical services to support PACE operations, specifically within PACE’s ‘Neuro Gym’, which houses programs and projects involving adults living with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions. The position requires a thorough understanding of University functions, policies and procedures, and experience liaising with health care practitioners, faculty researchers, student learners, and the public. Institutional knowledge and previous experience in exercise rehabilitation and adapted physical activity programming is essential.

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting with the implementation of community exercise programs. Participates in the delivery of community exercise programs to patients with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cardiovascular disease as well as otherwise healthy individual who may have risk factors for other chronic diseases.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology or related field of study.

  • Requires 3 years of relevant experience.

  • Must hold the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) certification.

  • Registered Kinesiologist with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct Initial Intake of new clients to assess clients current health status, wellness and rehabilitation goals.

  • Identify accommodations that will be required for exercise prescription.

  • Liaise with Physiotherapist on initial assessment findings and treatment plan.

  • Assist with development, implementation and evaluation of exercise rehab programs.

  • Participate in the review of assessments to evaluate client progress, attitude, and behavior and apply results to modify programming.

  • Liaise with clients and others regarding clinical exercise tests, specific exercise related issues and the client’s progress while participating in the program.

  • Liaise with community health care providers and referral source.

  • Liaise with participants, family and health care team members regarding initial findings, clinical exercise tests, specific exercise related issues and participants progress.

  • Complete client charts, documents client’s visits and findings and progress notes as per regulations of College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.

  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from participants, staff and students.

  • Assist Physiotherapist with the development of individualized exercise programs for client (includes patient education, cardiovascular fitness programs, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises and progressions of program).

  • Measure essential vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rates utilizing various diagnostic tools.

  • Educate clients on pathology, injury management, prevention and exercise programs.

  • Schedule re-assessments on a set time schedule to ensure safety and proper progressions.

  • Oversee and provide ongoing daily exercise supervision and prescription.

  • Advise clients regarding appropriate healing times, community resources, and appropriateness of pain and discomfort.

  • Address client behavior and progress and communicate concerns or changes to the client’s condition and rehab program to the Director, Experiential learning and Business Development.

  • Refer and facilitate booking for client assessments and treatments with Registered Physiotherapists and other fee-for-service providers in PACE.

  • Facilitate and provide one-on-one fee for service sessions with clients.

  • Assist with staff and student volunteer training in the program (instructs in activities such as program policies and procedures, clients exercise prescription and safety, emergency procedures, operating equipment, equipment maintenance, assisting clients with program changes, and progression and record keeping duties).

  • Provide ongoing instruction to and supervision of support staff and students.

  • Provide first aid care and emergency response as needed.

  • Complete incident reports as per University and Department policies.

  • Implement Health and Safety policies.

To be successful in this position, the candidate must possess:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Time management skills necessary to effectively multi-task and meet the demands of competing priorities

  • Strong organizational skills with relevant experience in both academic and community settings

  • A positive approach to customer service with strong interpersonal skills

  • A working knowledge of McMaster policies and procedures

The successful candidate will have experience:

  • Implementing exercise rehabilitation programs for clinical populations, specifically people living with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and developmental disabilities

  • Operating specialized gait training technology including, but not limited to body weight support treadmills, robotic gait orthoses, and overground walking systems

  • Working in a University environment at the research Centre level

  • Balancing competing demands in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment

  • Fielding both internal and public inquiries in accordance with McMaster policies and procedures

  • Liaising with medical offices of referring physicians and specialists, MUMC Medical Diagnostic Unit, Hamilton Health Sciences, MS Society of Canada, SCI Ontario, and DARTS transit

  • Working in a collaborative environment with other health care professionals including Registered Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists

  • Record keeping in accordance with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario

  • Managing confidential health information in accordance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act 2004 (PHIPA)

  • Assisting with planning, promoting, and implementing special events (fundraisers, social events, lectures, seminars)

  • Up to date First Aid/CPR Level C/AED Certification

  • Mental Health First Aid Certification
