POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Director or School and Classroom Supports, the Music therapist will work collaboratively with school teams,

clinical teams, and support staff to provide music therapy programming that helps students meaningfully participate and engage

in their learning environments. This position provides a unique approach to supporting students’ social, emotional, cognitive and

physical well-being through music-based interventions. Through the use of music, the successful candidate will help students to

express themselves, manage their emotions, and develop social skills, particularly students who have special learning needs,

students who are experiencing social isolation or students with a history of trauma.

Grounded in decolonization, reconciliation, Indigenous ways of being, and anti-racist/anti-oppressive pedagogies, this role drives

systemic change by embedding holistic, accessible, student-centered supports within LRSD’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) and

divisional priorities. Services include culturally responsive assessment, programming, therapeutic interventions and consultation.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Design and implement individualized and group music therapy sessions tailored to students’ unique needs and learning goals.
  • Collaborate with school teams, clinicians and support staff to support individualized programming.
  • Use music-based strategies to support communication, co-regulation, self-expression and social engagement.
  • Document progress, attend team planning meetings, and contribute to a whole-child approach to education.
  • Empower students through music-focused school events and performance opportunities that promote belonging and

connection.

  • Facilitate inclusive classroom experiences and staff development on music therapy strategies.
  • Advocate for the therapeutic role of the arts in education across the division.

QUALIFICATIONS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in music therapy from an AMTA-approved program.
  • Degree from an accredited music therapy program.
  • Current certification as a Music Therapist–Board Certified (MT-BC).
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • Strong skills in musical improvisation, multi-instrumental proficiency, and adaptive techniques.
  • Creative, empathetic, and team-oriented with strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practices, neurodiversity-affirming approaches, and culturally responsive therapy.
  • Experience in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of assistive communication technologies and adaptive music tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with students, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience applying inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Strong communication, organization, and capacity-building skills that support staff learning and student access.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Clear report from the Child Abuse Registry.
  • Respect In School or Commit To Kids certification.
  • Review and comply with divisional policies and guidelines.
  • Valid drivers’ licence and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
