Director of R&D Software (DaaS)
About the role
About Nanometrics
Nanometrics is a privately owned company that provides monitoring solutions and equipment for studying both man-made and natural seismicity. Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, we also have offices in Calgary, Beijing, and Houston, with representatives worldwide. (www.nanometrics.ca)
The company began as a seismic instrumentation provider. Our founder, Robin Hayman, spent 15 years at the Geological Survey of Canada, where he recognized the benefits of digitizing seismic data. In 1986, he founded Nanometrics and developed the RD-3 digitizer—the first of many revolutionary products we are proud to have designed and built.
For 40 years, Nanometrics has been a global leader in passive seismic monitoring solutions, serving as a trusted partner to governments and industries around the globe. We don’t just provide technology; we deliver strategic intelligence that empowers our customers to effectively manage seismic risk and hazard. From establishing mission-critical tsunami early warning systems to leveraging cutting-edge AI for rapid analysis of large datasets in the energy sector, we are at the forefront of passive seismic insights. This is where technology meets human safety.
Our integrated solutions, including precision instrumentation, proprietary software, hosted data centers, and expert services set the benchmark for the industry. Joining us means contributing to a vital global effort to advance our understanding of the planet and support a sustainable future.
Our customers are our greatest source of motivation and inspiration. They have always been, first and foremost, our partners in scientific discovery. They trust not only in the outstanding quality and performance of our instrumentation but also in our commitment to their science. Together, we’ve tackled the most challenging monitoring problems, developing new products and services along the way. By collaborating with leading scientific institutions, universities, geological surveys, and some of the world’s largest energy producers, Nanometrics has been transforming the field of seismology for over 30 years.
Over time, we have evolved into the full-service, integrated solutions provider we are today offering turnkey seismic networks, industry-leading precision instrumentation, comprehensive data processing and analysis services, and advanced software applications. Nanometrics’ innovative technology is deployed in mission-critical seismic arrays and tsunami warning systems across more than 90 countries worldwide.
Position
The Director of Software Development D-as-a-Service (DaaS) is a highly strategic leadership role, responsible for setting the technical vision and architectural direction while cultivating the diverse talent that is central to our (DaaS) innovation engine. This function guides the entire lifecycle of our proprietary offering: from the fundamental data science R&D that creates our unique, mission-critical data products, to the cloud-hosted software platforms ensuring their robust, efficient, and reliable delivery.
You will lead, mentor, and structurally align our diverse team of research scientists, software engineers, cloud specialists, and external technology partners. We seek a leader who can set the technical vision, architecture, and innovation roadmap while simultaneously inspiring and fostering a culture of excellence, engagement, and rapid skill development across these distinct disciplines. Leveraging strong business acumen, you will collaborate closely with peers in Operations, Product Management and Business Development, effectively translating strategic organizational goals into prioritized R&D investments and effective technical roadmaps.
This role is ideal for a professional who thrives on shaping the technical vision, organizational design, and collaborative culture of a mid-size DaaS organization, where operational efficiency, customer experience, and data product innovation are the highest priorities.
Competencies
Cross-Functional Collaborator
Thrives working with non-developer specialists, including PhD Geophysicists, Data and Network Operations.
Strategic Technology Adopter
Follows new and emerging software technologies and recommends adoption justified by a thorough cost-benefit analysis to ensure the expected value significantly outweighs the total cost and risk of integration.
Impact & Influence
Wants to be part of the team developing ideas to solve the problems, be involved in the discussion and decisions of the solutions. Wants to see their work impacting customers. Wants to influence the direction of the technology and products.
Pragmatic Technology Adopter (Recommends adoption based on cost-benefit)
Owns the 3-5 year technical roadmap. Drives innovation only where the ROI directly services the DaaS profitability and operational reliability. Screens out technological fads that introduce unnecessary risk, cost or are misaligned with the value proposition strategy.
Culture of Pragmatism & Ownership
Cultivates a team culture where developers are encouraged to challenge scope and propose solutions (aligning with the Impact & Influence goal), rewarding stability, maintainability, and cost reduction equally with new feature delivery.
Job Duties
Technical Strategy & Architectural Ownership
- Own and drive the strategic evolution of the platform architecture, technology stack, and development framework with support from key stakeholders and external technical experts to implement a robust, scalable foundation for current and future data product offerings, while maintaining high operational efficiency.
- Evolve the architecture for the ingestion, real-time processing, and durable storage of high-volume, continuous seismic data streams.
- Champion the practical application of advanced analytical methods and technology to maximize the fidelity (speed, accuracy, consistency, resolution) of our data products and drive data product portfolio expansion.
- Proactively manage technical and strategic risk across the R&D portfolio, including obsolescence, architectural evolution, and intellectual property (IP) protection, ensuring roadmaps remain closely aligned with evolving market needs and corporate risk profile.
Leadership & Team Development
- Instill and champion a unified SciDevOps culture across the R&D function, integrating the value stream from scientific discovery and algorithm creation through to robust, continuous deployment and 24/7 operational stability.
- Define and evolve the organizational design of the R&D team to maximize effectiveness, focusing on succession planning and development pathways for both research scientists and software engineering talent.
- Develop and optimize the resource strategy fostering an agile environment that couples internal focus on core DaaS differentiators with an effective outsourcing approach.
Business Alignment & Execution
- Own the end-to-end development pipeline, ensuring predictable delivery in close alignment with business expansion plans and ongoing customer commitments.
- Act as the core translator and facilitator between commercial business objectives and R&D, ensuring R&D priorities are mapped and prioritized directly to measurable business outcomes.
- Establish and lead continuous improvement processes using data-driven key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive tangible improvements in DaaS development framework.
- Own and lead all executive communication regarding R&D strategy, platform performance, and product development status, providing clear, concise, and strategic updates to senior management.
Job Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- 10+ years of progressive R&D experience leading teams that build and operate complex, cloud-based DaaS/SaaS platforms.
- Data Architecture & Technical Depth: Advanced expertise in data management, cloud architecture, and the design of mission-critical Data-as-a-Service platforms.
- AI/ML Productization: Proven success integrating production-grade AI/ML models into data analytics systems to drive tangible increases in custom
- Demonstrated expert use of Transformational and Situational leadership to scale and develop high-performing engineering talent.
- Past experience in utilizing Agile, Lean, and DevOps principles in development of mission-critical, high-availability data systems.
- Proven track record of having successfully implemented a mixed development model, effectively balancing in-house core technology with strategic outsourcing.
