Purpose As a key member of the Women & Children’s Health team, the Registered Practical Nurse is responsible for assessing, analyzing, prioritizing, planning and evaluating care in collaboration with patients and families in both normal and complex situations. The nursing care includes antenatal care, intrapartum care, immediate postpartum care, breastfeeding support, infant care and care following perinatal loss. This position contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Duties

• Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care.
• Effectively use the Standards of nursing practice and the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
• Provide health teaching to patients and family.
• Compliant with legislation, and organizational and departmental policies, standards, and procedures.
• Maintain commitment to self-growth and professional development.
• Demonstrate good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Remain current in knowledge and application of best practice through the utilization of appropriate research and literature.
• Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
• Participate in research opportunities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing program.
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing.
• Valid NRP
• Current certification in venipuncture (I.V. therapy).
• Breastfeeding course (20 hours)

Experience

• Post-partum experience recent within the last 2 years

• Medical or pediatric experience recent within the last 2 years

• Previous experience performing the scrub role in the operating room, with demonstrated knowledge and adherence to perioperative sterile technique

• Demonstrated knowledge in the care of post-operative patients.

• Post-Partum experience in:

• Breastfeeding

• Maternal Child Care

• Newborn Care

• Gestational Age Assessments

Knowledge, Skills & Ability

• Meet physical demands of the job, including extended standing, walking, lifting and climbing using proper technique.
• Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).
• Competence in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
• Knowledge of patient care requirements and specialized equipment as appropriate to the clinical area.
• Working knowledge and understanding of the standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
• Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
• Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
• Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
• Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
• Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
