About the role

HI Banff Alpine Centre

Banff is a world-class destination, it’s on every backpacker’s bucket list, both for the unspoiled wilderness and outdoor opportunities the National Park has to offer. The town is internationally renowned for being a great place to work, live and party with young travel driven people from all over the world and there’s no better place to do this than at our hostel.

We’re a team of avid travellers who’ve chosen to work in this place, and this hostel, because we want to be immersed in a culture of other like-minded people who believe in respecting each other, learning about other people’s cultures, making meaningful connections, and getting the best out of their Canadian experience.

There’s room for growth and discovery! Many of our leaders started out on the front lines, and we’re eager to promote from within and provide opportunities to try out different roles. Looking to stay in Canada permanently? We can help! Ask us about our Manager-In-Training (MIT) program!

Our staff accommodation has everything you need and is extremely affordable, one of the cheapest in town, fully furnished with all utilities included. We have a fleet of mountain bikes and all the camping equipment you need to get out and explore even more.

What's in it for you ?

  • Get the best value on staff accommodation: $6.50 per day for a shared room in one of our seven on-site staff apartments. Shortest commute to work guaranteed.
  • Constant events to join in on with other guests and staff, such as karaoke, pub crawls, BBQs, campfires, learn-to-rock-climb days, spikeball tournaments, yoga classes, ... or borrow one of the mountain bikes, canoes, paddle boards, or camping gear and head out with your teammates for your own adventure!
  • Chance to win a Sunshine Village ski pass for the 2026-2027 season during our summer HI-MAZING RACE.
  • All units are fully furnished, have access to WIFI, and include all utilities/cable TV provided!
  • Free stay at other HI properties (13 other hostels in the Banff/Jasper/Yoho area alone!) and 50% for your friends and family.
  • 40% off any meals in our restaurant, and great deals in our bar: “The Storm Cellar”.
  • Free Hosteling International Memberships.
  • Meet like-minded travellers everyday and become their local guide.
  • A laid-back atmosphere where the uniform’s a T-shirt and the motto is to have fun.
  • Employee & Family Assistance Program.

What you will be doing as a Line Cook

  • Our Line Cooks work the back-of-house and the front-of-house in our fast casual restaurant. So, you’ll not only be preparing and cooking meals in a timely, standardized, and professional manner, but will also be directly serving our customers, handling payments, and sharing your knowledge of Banff to our curious guests.
  • If you love working in a restaurant environment and can handle high volume workloads, this could be the job for you.
  • There is no front-of-house payout, the tips you earn through your great customer service are the tips you get to take home. At most, you will be sharing tips with your co-worker when there is two of you on. Regardless, your Sunday-Funday fund will grow quickly!
  • All F&B agents get trained on the bar and will have the opportunity to pick up bar shifts for some great fun and extra tips.
  • You’ll also be able to enjoy the fact that you are part of a not-for-profit organization that embraces sustainable tourism.

What we look for

  • You’ll need some previous cooking experience; we’ll train you up to be a great line cook in time, but some previous commercial kitchen experience is required.
  • You’ll need to bring your positive energy and humour to work every day, because as well as working with teammates you’ll also be dealing with our guests directly – you're the face of the hostel!
  • You’ll need to be able to handle some stressful times with a smile when it’s busy and be interested in learning more. Our team learns how to be line cooks, servers, bartenders and handles large catering for a significant part of the year – and you’ll be involved in all of these if you stay with us long enough! Having some front-of-house and extensive back-of-house experience will make you a great candidate.

About HI

We love travelling. To us, travel isn’t just about going to places, it’s also about meeting people, discovering cultures, eating new food and most of all, learning how people do things differently than we do back home.

We believe that through hostelling, we become more conscious of the world around us; and we can even make the world a better place. Our mission is to build a community of conscious travellers who share a greater understanding of people, places and cultures through our network of hostels and people.

About Hostelling International Canada

Non-profit Organizations
501-1000

We speak different languages, but we're all in this together. Hostels were designed to lower the barriers to travel, because we believe travel fosters a deeper understanding of people, places, and the world around. It's our mission to promote a community of global citizens who have the wisdom and humanity to make the world a better place, and that's what makes hostels the first choice for experienced travelers.

In hostels, you're more likely to meet someone from the other side of the world than someone from your hometown. Our shared kitchens, dining rooms and lounges ensure plenty of opportunities to connect with other travelers, and with hostel events and programs ranging from casual outings to rich cultural activities we help you get to know the destination as we do, beyond what you'll find in guidebooks.

The best part is you don't have to travel far or study abroad to experience hostels for yourself. Our affordable hostels are located in converted mansions, reinvented lighthouses and historic buildings reclaimed in the spirit of discovery and community all across the country.

Hostelling International USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. HI USA, in cooperation with other national associations worldwide, belongs to Hostelling International. This global network offers thousands of hostels in nearly 80 countries.
