Warehouse Technician I
About the role
The Warehouse Technician I is responsible for the efficient flow of goods through our warehouses. Warehouse Technician will support key areas such as parks and roads, fabrication shop and other warehouses.
The Warehouse Technician also requires strong customer service skills to address inquiries, resolve issues, and provide timely and accurate information regarding orders and inventory. This position demands a combination of physical ability, attention to detail, and communication skills to effectively manage warehouse operations and contribute to customer satisfaction.
What will you do?
- Reviews catalogues and electronic system to select the correct general supplies based on needs
- Determines source of general supply for any special order requirements through requisitions, reservations as internal order, and sourcing functions
- Prepares quotes for business partners for any general supply requirements
- Receives general supplies for inventory and special orders and validates for quality and quantity
- Ensures every product that requires a Safety Data Sheet is updated and available
- Enters receiving data into the corporate inventory management system
- Picks orders and prepares for shipping
- Conducts cycle counts and wall to wall inventory counts
- Determines whether general supplies are required for the present or the future and works with Supply Chain teams to determine disposition method
- Returns incorrect and obsolete items to appropriate supplier
- Ensures general supply catalogues and electronic system are maintained up to date
- Coordinate pick up and delivery of orders for warehouses within the supply chain and dispatch to couriers as required
- Load and unload trucks and operating warehouse equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks
- Maintains staging area for pre-selected general supply in an orderly fashion to support business partners activities and campaigns
- Other related duties
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- 2 years practical warehousing experience
- Occupational Health and Safety; WHMIS; SDS; TDG training
Assets:
- Fork lift truck license is an asset
- Registered as an apprentice in the Journeyman Materials Technician program is an asset
Conditions of Employment:
- A Police Information Check that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton is required. There may be a cost associated with this
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License, must be eligible to obtain a City Driving Permit
Work Environment:
- This position requires considerable/heavy physical effort, including lifting up to 100 lbs and working in awkward or constrained physical positions when required. The work environment involves exposure to indoor and outdoor temperatures, dust, noise, and potential exposure to chemicals. The use of safety footwear, gloves, and eye protection is required.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used by warehousing operations, support fleet maintenance, roadway maintenance, fabrication technologies
- Knowledge of inventory management, automated office and inventory control systems
- Knowledge of purchasing, and requisitioning procedures
- Knowledge and experience related to storage and handling of hazardous goods
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to work highly independent; ability to take initiative and be resourceful
- Ability to identify where non-standard processes should apply; ability to make effective recommendations and seek approval for action, as required
- Ability to consider impact to other organizations and business units
- Physical ability to perform work functions of this position
- Ability to safely operate a forklift
