Job Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent assists with the planning, scheduling and managing of projects for the construction and/or repair of heavy civil engineering projects such as roads, bridges, airports, sewers and water mains, including the supervision of all skilled and semi-skilled workers. Also assists in the administration of contracts in conjunction with the Project Coordinator.
Indirectly supervises all project staff (project engineers, foremen, labourers, and operators).
- Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial and local laws, while adhering to OH&S rules and regulations.
- Assist in the mobilization and directing of resources assigned in order to achieve maximum contribution to fixed costs and profits.
- Establish and monitor construction work schedules as directed.
- Allocate work to and supervise the activities of all foremen assigned to the project as directed.
- Assist in the creation of accurate forecasts of financial status for assigned projects.
- Assist in the maintenance of overall inventory control of all materials, plants and equipment assigned to the project.
- Keep a diary and maintain adequate records regarding items of work under dispute.
- Administer all labour agreements as per current procedures.
- Coordinate the administration of contracts in conjunction with the Estimator/ Project Coordinator.
- Maintain positive customer relationships.
- Prepare all reporting as per current procedures.
- Assist in the hiring and development of project staff.
- Act as a team lead while positively representing the company and supporting the Superintendent.
- Keep Project Superintendent informed of significant developments.
Requirements:
- University degree in civil engineering or Civil Engineering Technologist Diploma.
- 3 - 5 years experience as an Assistant Superintendent within Heavy Civil, Roads or Bridges and working experience with MTO.
- P3 Project experience (Design-Build etc.) is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, scheduling, safety regulations (OHSA), quality standards, and contract documents.
- Proven ability to supervise field crews, manage subcontractors, and coordinate multiple work fronts.
- Skilled in reading drawings, managing site logistics, controlling costs, and maintaining accurate project documentation.
- Effective leadership, communication, and problem solving skills with the ability to coach and motivate teams.
- Ability to build strong relationships with clients, inspectors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work in varying weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
