Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary The Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta is looking to fill the position of Chair, Department of Computing Science as of July 1, 2026. Candidates must hold a tenured appointment as full-time academic faculty members in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta.

The Department of Computing Science is one of Canada's largest and oldest computing science departments, and a world leader in the field. It also has an excellent Outreach Program. The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is also a key player, as one of three institutions in the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. The Department has 51 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 7 academic teaching staff who are recognized for their excellence in research and teaching at the international, national, and university level. The Department’s student population includes approximately 561 graduate students, 2,426 undergraduate honors, specialization students and majors/minors students. Approximately 7,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in Computing Science courses each term. The Department’s annual operating grant totals approximately $17.8 million, while annual research funding expenditures total approximately $13.3 million.

The Department of Computing Science Executive team comprises the Chair, the Associate Chair, Vice Dean (Graduate), Research Director, Graduate Application Chair, Director of Amii, Assistant Associate Chair, and the Academic Department Manager.

Overview of the Role

Department Chairs Oversee Their Department's Operations, Including

  • Strategic planning;
  • Guiding and enabling the development and success of faculty members and staff;
  • Development, supervision, and administration of academic programs;
  • Student enrollment target planning;
  • Budget planning, financial management, and oversight; and
  • Many other department activities.

Qualifications Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have a proven track record in teaching, service, and research, including an established funded research program. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as a vision to maintain and strengthen the department's excellent national and international reputation. They will participate as a member of teams and committees with other University administrators and staff at department, faculty, and college levels. In line with the Faculty of Science’s strategic priorities, the successful candidates will lead the Department in modernizing undergraduate and graduate programs with industry-relevant curricula; Fostering belonging and meaningful access for members of the university community and living out commitments to Indigenization and decolonization; and supporting research effectiveness, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship of trainees and new faculty members. They will incorporate inclusive practices into all aspects of initiative planning, execution and interactions with internal and external partners to ensure access, foster community connections and increase belonging.
