About the role

The primary focus is supporting the tax practice and the overall delivery of tax services by the Firm by providing font-line support on risk management, quality, tax planning, compliance, and reporting matters through the application of professional standards and Firm policies.

The responsibilities for the Principal within National Tax will include being part of the Firm’s Professional Practice Group includes the following:

  • Collaboration with the Professional Practice Group on developing and implementing best practices for tax services from a quality and risk management perspective.
  • Proactively identifying improvements in our tax policies and leading the development and rollout of any significant tax policy changes.
  • Supporting National Tax and engagement teams in high-risk tax areas as needed (e.g. mandatory disclosure rules, the general anti-avoidance rule, etc.).
  • Supporting National Tax in project-based initiatives.
  • Assessing areas of risk within the tax practice and developing risk management policies for recommendation to the National Tax Leader.
  • Liaising with and being a resource for the local business unit/tax specialty Tax Service Line and Risk Leaders, as needed
  • Providing timely, practical, solutions-oriented, technically sound and objective advice on the application of professional standards and Firm policies for complex and high risk professional services matters for tax.
  • Proactively considering the impact of new legislation/proposals, CRA guidance, tax court cases etc. on our tax policies and risk management processes, and working with National Tax as-needed to ensure the appropriate tools and resources are in place to minimize our risks.
  • Chairing the GAAR Committee, actively participating in or liaising with various other internal tax committees, and representing the Firm on industry committees as-needed.
  • Working with the General Counsel’s Office on various risk-related matters.
  • Supporting the annual internal inspection process from a tax perspective, including updating tax-related procedures, serving as the Tax resource for the inspection team, and analyzing the results.
  • Providing input and recommendations from a risk perspective on new technologies being explored for use in tax services delivery at the Firm.
  • Building relationships with principals, partners and leadership to foster and reinforce professional services quality and risk management at all levels.
  • Working proactively with new offices and colleagues to ensure that they are onboarded and compliant with our tax policies
  • Proactively developing and delivering new and updated training related to tax policy and risk management.

  • Completion of Bachelor and/or Master's Degree in related field: Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Law, and/or Taxation.
  • Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Designation and completed CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program.
  • 10+ years’ experience in public accounting or related industry
  • Demonstrated experience growing a practice and business development which focuses on development of relationships and actively anticipating client and market needs
  • Strong management and leadership skills with the ability to be an active participant in the development of the national tax team
  • Develop solutions with clients and co-workers through collaborative effort and discussion
  • Commitment to quality, excellence and continual professional growth for yourself and for those you lead
  • Excellent written, and verbal communication skills, including exceptional interpersonal skills to earn the trust and confidence of clients and colleagues at all levels and influence decision-makers
