About Us

Environmental Sciences Western is a Faculty of Science field station located approximately 14 km north of the main Western campus. It is used for inter and multidisciplinary research by faculty in the Departments of Biology, Physics and Astronomy and Geology, along with researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Responsibilities

The Summer Student - Field Technician will work as a member of a team and will effectively conduct a variety of tasks including aiding with planting field crops (horticultural crops and trees), participating in crop management (pruning, weeding, mulching and cultivation), preparing, measuring, planting and maintaining data collection of all field test plots, helping with the maintenance of the grounds using mowers, hand powered trimmers and pruners, and safely operating tractors with attached implements and other equipment as instructed by supervisors. The position will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their work team. All tasks performed will be safely instructed and guided by a Supervisor.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Must be a full-time student currently enrolled in a University or College program and returning to studies in the fall
  • Preferred background in agricultural, horticultural and farming

Experience:

  • Previous work experience in a similar role or within the department

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Ability to work outdoors through a range of weather conditions and walk for lengthy periods of time
  • Ability to maintain a positive and outgoing attitude
  • Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
  • Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team
  • Interest and/or experience in agriculture, horticulture and farming maintenance
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario G2 Class Driver's License
  • Ability to arrange own transportation to and from the Field Station (located 22312 Wonderland Rd. N., R.R.#3 Ilderton, ON N0M 2A0)
