ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Management, and functionally to the Regional Fire Coordinator, is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of fire/life safety and personal emergency preparedness educational programing at the Community Safety Village; designing, facilitating, administering, and evaluating fire prevention programs mandated under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and personal emergency preparedness education program under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act; facilitating Risk Watch and programs of Fire/Life Safety for those who visit and use the Safety Village; working closely and in co-operation with York Region Police and other educators (e.g., EMS, Public Health Educators) in the day-to-day administration of the Village.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Researches, designs, develops, delivers and evaluates public education programs that apply the principles of fire and life safety and adhere to legislation with respect to public education; prepares training materials including lesson plans with identified learning objectives and any other materials needed for presentations to classes; develops and ensures availability of learning resources.
  • Monitors program budget and resources assigned to carry out public, life safety, fire and personal emergency preparedness education and makes recommendations to the annual program budget.
  • Prepares monthly staffing reports for Manager; maintains on-going total staffing hours to assist with assigning coverage.
  • Co-ordinates and schedules the activities of casual staff, volunteers and co-op students; provides training, monitors the activities, and evaluates casual staff, volunteers and co-op students; co-ordinates activities for Fire Prevention Week; recommends professional development opportunities and participates in the evaluation and selection of the casual-on-call staff, as required.
  • Monitors casual on-call staffing budget assigned to the Safety Village and makes recommendations to annual staffing budget.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate, from the general public etc.
  • Researches, designs, develops, delivers and evaluates a personal emergency preparedness program for grade five students which identifies types of disasters that may affect the Region, components of a family disaster plan, evacuation considerations and family disaster supplies; prepares training materials including lesson plans with identified learning objectives and any other materials needed for presentation to classes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with Safety Village, Department and Corporate objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Education or related field and successful completion of the Public Fire and Life Safety Educator’s Certificate from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years Teaching experience or experience as a Public Educator.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability in sound teaching/learning strategies, methods and delivery techniques based on learner styles/needs.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self management and accountability, and flexibility/adaptability.
  • Knowledge of marketing principles and creative and technical ability to develop relevant and age appropriate educational resources.
  • Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software and proficiency in desktop publishing software required to create educational/promotional resources.
  • Ability to plan, design, develop and deliver Regional-based education programs, including the ability to deliver education to high risk groups in the Region.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships/coalitions and conduct successful fundraising.
  • Ability to conduct needs analysis and produce fire and safety concern profiles relevant to curriculum and the community being served.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
