This position reports to the Maintenance Team in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. The Grande Prairie mill is a 1000+ tonne per day Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill. It currently operates with approximately 380 mill employees in a high performance, results oriented environment.
Key Functions
The Heavy Duty Mechanic / Planner Coordinator is responsible for performing repairs, preventative maintenance, and planning/scheduling activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the mill’s transport and heavy equipment. This role combines technical expertise with planning and coordinating responsibilities to support equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
Key Accountabilities
Safety

Actively participate in safety, health, and environmental programs in accordance with Grande Prairie Mill standards.

Ensure all maintenance and planning activities prioritize safe work practices and compliance.
Maintain Equipment
-
Work collaboratively within a team environment to maintain a variety of equipment across the mill with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

Support maintenance planning by coordinating schedules and resources to minimize downtime.
Perform Preventative Maintenance
-
Perform preventative maintenance tasks, complete work orders, and follow PM routes within assigned areas.

Develop and promote a preventative maintenance mindset versus a reactionary approach.

Utilize SAP to plan, schedule, and document preventative maintenance activities.
Failure Elimination
-
Actively participate in Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to resolve recurring issues and improve reliability.

Perform surveys of failure causes (e.g., lubrication, mechanical systems), using technical knowledge and equipment history to recommend solutions.

Coordinate corrective actions and track progress through SAP.
Work Systems Improvements

Contribute to the development and improvement of technical standards, work instructions, and procedures.

Identify opportunities to improve maintenance planning, scheduling, and execution processes.

Collaborate with operations and maintenance leaders to align work systems with mill reliability objectives.

Qualifications
Required qualifications include:

High school diploma, GED, or completion of a trade school program

Minimum 5 years of experience working with transport and heavy-duty equipment
-
Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair bearings, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, engines, transmissions, and related equipment
-
Experience interpreting and applying manufacturer maintenance manuals
-
Proficiency in using computers for troubleshooting, record-keeping, and documentation
-
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (verbal and written English)
-
Ability to understand and follow complex work instructions and perform duties with minimal supervision
-
Willingness and ability to work overtime, weekends, and on-call as required
-
Willingness and ability to work in hot, humid, cold, and noisy environments
-
Ability to travel internationally if required
Preferred qualifications include:
- Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic certification
- Minimum 5 years experience as a full-time Heavy Duty Mechanic journeyperson technician
- CVIP Certification/Experience
- Proficiency with SAP, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating maintenance work orders
- A couple of years of experience leading a shop or team, with proven coordination and organizational skills
- Demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, or supporting maintenance activities
- Experience leading or managing teams/crews
- Off-road equipment experience
- Class 1 or 3 driver’s license
- Specialized hydraulic systems experience
