Job Description

The General Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations of assigned service center(s) and leading a cross-functional team in delivering high-quality fire and life safety solutions. This role requires a strong blend of leadership, technical expertise, and business acumen to drive sustainable growth, operational excellence, and a strong safety-first culture.

The General Manager manages both union and non-union personnel, ensures compliance with all applicable local, provincial, and national fire codes and standards, and maintains a strong focus on customer satisfaction. Working closely with executive leadership and corporate partners, the General Manager develops and executes strategies that enhance profitability, operational efficiency, and long-term organizational success.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Safety Culture

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key clients, ensuring timely, professional resolution of inquiries, concerns, and feedback.
  • Proactively identify and implement opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction, retention, and loyalty through value-added services and solutions.
  • Champion a strong safety culture across all service and project activities, ensuring technicians consistently follow safe work practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and reinforce safety reporting, including near-miss reporting, incident investigations, and corrective actions to drive continuous improvement in field operations.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Drive the strategic vision for the service center(s) while operating effectively at both a tactical, day-to-day level and a higher-level oversight role; seamlessly flexing between the two as required.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a diverse team of technicians, project managers, sales professionals, and administrative staff.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement across union and non-union teams.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide ongoing coaching, and support employee development and succession planning.
  • Ensure effective labor relations and alignment with applicable union collective bargaining agreements.

Business Development & Sales Leadership

  • Develop and execute strategic business plans to drive significant revenue growth and market expansion within the assigned territory.
  • Lead, manage, and hold the sales team accountable for performance, pipeline development, and achievement of revenue targets.
  • Actively contribute to sales efforts through individual involvement in key accounts, strategic pursuits, and high-value opportunities.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities through networking, prospecting, partnerships, and relationship building.
  • Strengthen relationships with existing clients to expand service offerings, increase wallet share, and improve long-term retention.

Project & Operational Management

  • Oversee the execution of service and project work from inception through completion, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate closely with internal departments and external stakeholders to resolve operational and project-related challenges.
  • Monitor project and service profitability, taking proactive measures to manage costs, mitigate risks, and improve financial performance.
  • Ensure operational processes align with corporate standards while meeting local market needs.

Technical & Industry Expertise

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of fire alarm, sprinkler, security, and access control systems and related technologies.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of applicable fire and life safety codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, provincial, and national regulations governing fire and life safety systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members and clients as required.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to support innovation and continuous improvement.

Matrixed Collaboration & Corporate Alignment

  • Operate effectively within a matrixed organization, collaborating with corporate functions such as finance, HR, safety, engineering, and operations.
  • Build alignment and buy-in from executive leadership while translating corporate strategy into actionable plans at the local operations level.
  • Communicate effectively across multiple levels of the organization to ensure strategic consistency and operational execution.

Minimum Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven leadership experience within the fire and life safety industry, with demonstrated success in operations, sales, or project management.
  • Experience working within a matrixed organization, collaborating across departments while influencing outcomes at both corporate and local levels.
  • Strong technical knowledge of fire alarm, sprinkler, security, and access control systems.
  • Solid understanding of union environments and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans to achieve business and financial objectives.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the assigned territory as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to travel.

FSP has and will continue to grow organically and through acquisition of several smaller, like-minded businesses built on customer service and local code expertise in the installation, service/repair, and inspection of fire & life safety systems such as fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, and access control, video surveillance and other security systems for all types of buildings.
