Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager of Risk Management, this position will be responsible to:
- Investigate, negotiate, mitigate and settle claims made against the Corporations/entities, for bodily injury, automobile accident benefits, general liability and property losses, including subrogation within authorized limits.
- Follow and develop procedures to ensure proper and efficient handling of claims, gathering of data on claims for both record keeping and loss forecasting purposes and estimating the financial value of claims (reserves).
- Maintain and review loss data as it may relate to various activities of the Corporations/entities and departments liaise with user departments providing pre and post risk management advice.
- Assist user departments to develop loss control techniques and provide recommendations leading to the reduction and prevention of claims, risks and hazards that have become apparent through facilitation of the claims process.
- Attend and photograph, as required, accident or loss scenes; attend and secure statements from claimants and witnesses to assist in determining liability and negotiating the compensation or resolve of losses.
- Perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Must have a Masters Degree or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and minimum of 1 year of experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of claims; significant exposure related to bodily injury claims; the understanding of medical terminology and the interpretation of medical reports; the exposure to settling of bodily injury reserves; exposure to underwriting and loss analysis. OR
- Must have a University Degree or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and minimum of 2 years of experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of claims; significant exposure related to bodily injury claims; the understanding of medical terminology and the interpretation of medical reports; the exposure to settling of bodily injury reserves; exposure to underwriting and loss analysis. OR
- Must have a College Diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and minimum of 4 years of experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of claims; significant exposure related to bodily injury claims; the understanding of medical terminology and the interpretation of medical reports; the exposure to settling of bodily injury reserves; exposure to underwriting and loss analysis. OR
- Must have an Ontario Secondary School graduation diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency plus one year of additional courses related to insurance and minimum of 6 years of experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of claims; significant exposure related to bodily injury claims; the understanding of medical terminology and the interpretation of medical reports; the exposure to settling of bodily injury reserves; exposure to underwriting and loss analysis. OR
- Must have an Ontario Secondary School graduation diploma or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and minimum 10 years of experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of claims; significant exposure related to bodily injury claims; the understanding of medical terminology and the interpretation of medical reports; the exposure to settling of bodily injury reserves; exposure to underwriting and loss analysis.
- Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful Driver's Licence is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
- Must have experience in a computerized environment and working knowledge of Word, Excel and database software or equivalent software programs. knowledge of various statutes including The Insurance Act of Ontario (OMPP, Bill 164, and Bill 59 including any further statutorial amendments to Provincial automobile insurance legislation), Occupier’s Liability Act, The Negligence Act, The Municipal Act and any other statutes relative to the job function.
- Must have knowledge of ethical standards relating to the legal and adjusting professions: extensive knowledge of insurance wordings, interpretations, and coverage’s for property and casualty insurance including both commercial and personal lines of insurance: risk management principles.
- Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
- Chartered Insurance Professionals (CIP) designation or Associate of the Insurance Institute designation (AIIC) considered an asset.
