The Project Manager in the microbiology laboratory oversees the planning, execution, and completion of laboratory projects, ensuring alignment with scientific, regulatory, and organizational objectives. This role coordinates cross-functional teams, manages timelines and resources, and ensures the delivery of high-quality results within established deadlines.
About the Department of Microbiology:
As a collaborative laboratory operation between Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network (UHN), the Department of Microbiology stands as a beacon of excellence, both locally and nationally. Each year, our team conducts over 700,000 tests for a diverse range of patients, including both inpatients and outpatients, underscoring our critical role in patient care and public health. Driven by innovation, we offer the full range of high quality microbiology services, from routine cultures and susceptibility testing to molecular diagnostic testing. New assays are continually being developed by our medical and scientific staff in response to clinical and research needs. We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic services, methods development, research, and education. We are a prime reference center for both hospital and private sector laboratories.
In this role you will:
- Lead and manage multiple microbiology projects from initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to project goals, timelines, and budgets.
- Collaborate with Medical Microbiologists, Manager, technologists, technicians, and external partners to define project scope, objectives, and deliverables.
- Develop detailed project plans, including resource allocation, risk assessment, and contingency strategies.
- Monitor project progress, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols, quality standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ACDx, GMP, ISO).
- Prepare and present regular project updates, reports, and documentation to stakeholders and senior management.
- Facilitate effective communication among project team members and resolve conflicts or bottlenecks.
- Oversee procurement and management of laboratory supplies, equipment, and external services related to project needs.
- Support the implementation of new technologies, methodologies, and process improvements within the laboratory.
- Train and mentor laboratory staff on project management best practices and tools
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)

5 years current experience within the last 5-7 years in Medical Microbiology Laboratory

5 years in a progressively responsible position in microbiology within the last 5-7 years
Preferred

University degree in related field
Skills and Knowledge

Proven experience in project management within a laboratory environment.

Strong understanding of microbiological techniques, laboratory operations, and regulatory standards.

Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, multiple tasks, projects and meet deadlines

Strong leadership and interpersonal abilities, with experience managing cross-functional teams.

Proficiency in computer literacy, including Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and MS Office
