Payband: This position is paid at Payband J.

Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Position Summary: The Career Services Consultant provides comprehensive employment and career support services for Fanshawe students and graduates, and for employers recruiting students and graduates. The Strategic Mandate Agreement states employment outcomes post-graduation as a key funding factor. To accomplish this, the CSC plans, develops, creates, markets, facilitates and analyzes outcomes on all manner of employment and career related activities and materials such as mock interviews, career assessments using psychometric tools, workshops and events. In addition, the CSC provides employment and career information, advice and support services for academic and administrative endeavours at Fanshawe and elsewhere in the community. All services are performed in individual or group settings and either face to face or virtually. As a member of Student Services, the Career Services Consultant participates and attends College events such as Graduation and Open House, Student Services events such as Orientation and the HUBS, and ESES events, such as Career Fair and Ignite.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In groups or individually, in the classroom or office, in workshop and event formats, in-person or through technology, informs and assists students and graduates to prepare for a successful transition from College to seasonal, parttime or career employment.

  • Participates in Orientation, Fanshawe Works, Graduation and Open House.

  • Originates, prepares and distributes career related instructional materials.

  • Provides advice and direction on resumes, cover letters, interview preparation, career directions, job search and maintenance techniques.

  • Assists students, alumni (no cost) and the general public (fee for service) identify personal and generic skills leading to career options and relevant educational and experiential options through the use of career assessments.

  • Maintains comprehensive case notes on assessments.

  • Supports students to make informed program changes through the use of career assessments hence increasing student retention and graduation rates.

  • Advises current and potential students about current employment vacancies and future labour market trends.

  • Advises regarding Workers' Rights (employment standards, harassment, safety, etc.).

  • Provides specialized support to students with life skill related employment barriers and disabilities; assesses and deals with confidential issues.

  • Advises and educates students and graduates on fraudulent job postings and how to detect them.

  • Responds to enquiries from diverse employers seeking information about Fanshawe College and training provided.

  • Advises employers on graduate numbers, availability and wage rates;

  • Assists and advises employers with 'needs assessment' to aid in matching Fanshawe students and grads to job requirements.

  • Assists and advises employers with creating job descriptions.

  • Facilitates on-campus employer presentations and recruitment activities.

  • Vets and approves job listings, directs clerical staff regarding posting to CS website.

  • Investigates potential fraudulent job postings and red flags employers.

  • T roubleshoot strategies with employers to increase number of applicants to fill vacancies.

  • Plans, develops, promotes and facilitates a variety of career related educational activities to promote Fanshawe College, its programs and graduates to students, employers and other interested parties; examples include 'hallway' promotions, guest speaker seminars, annual Career Fair, Ignite, and Fanshawe Works.

  • Actively participates in partnerships with internal college partners, other colleges, and industry representatives on projects that influence employment/career outcomes for students and graduates.

  • Advises prospective students and their parents regarding program employment outcomes through labour market information, and supports prospective students in their program decisions/choices with the use of career assessment tools.

  • Represents College at business, government, professional or educational meetings, events and committees and liaises with other relevant organizations.

  • Responds to requests from College staff, management, students, employers, and members of the community for career related reports, material or data.

  • Participates in program advisory committees, program reviews and provides input into new program delivery on employment outcomes, opportunities and challenges.

  • Supports academic program delivery for career related activities in the classroom through mock interviews, resume classes, information sharing, labour market analysis, Canadian content delivery, job site navigation, interview tools, etc.

  • Represents ESES at college and student services events and service delivery options (HUBS).

  • Creates and delivers employment related micro credentials.

  • Responds to requests from legal representatives for evidence documentation related to litigation over graduate employment data. .

Qualifications :

  • Post-secondary 3-year diploma/degree in Human Services, Human Resources, Social Science, or Career Development Practitioner
  • Minimum 5 years’ direct experience in an employment and career-related support services organization helping students, graduates and/or clients to prepare for (re-) entry into the labour force, knowledge of the labour market
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Breadth of knowledge of Fanshawe programs and related employment outcomes, life skill programming
  • Experience in personal counselling, skills assessment and/or marketing required
  • Experience with face-to-face and virtual service delivery methodologies in individual and group settings
  • Classroom/conference delivery with groups over 100+ students
  • Psychometric Assessment Certifications would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Career Services at Fanshawe, ESES and knowledge of Student Services
  • Knowledge of shifting labour market requirements and trends
  • Exceptional communication skills, interpersonal skills, complex problem solving and an empathetic persona
  • Excellent organizational skills and critical thinking to resolve issues that may arise
  • Independence of action and creativity are required
  • Respect for diversity is mandatory
