Customs Specialist
About the role
Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Logistics Distribution Services, the Customs Specialist is responsible for overseeing all customs compliance, import/export activities under the CSA program, and regulatory adherence across distribution operations. This role ensures prompt clearance of shipments, accurate documentation, timely reporting, and alignment with applicable trade regulations to support uninterrupted supply chain flow.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and review customs documentation, including commercial invoices, bills of lading, HS classification, and certificates of origin. Ensure accurate tariff classification and duty/tax calculations. Function as the liaison with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies (CBSA, CBP, PGAs, etc.) Oversee import operations under the CSA program, ensuring efficient customs processes, compliance with CBSA regulations, and continuous improvement of border clearance procedures. Manage and maintain CARM Client Portal activities, including account access management, financial and accounting reviews, correction monitoring, and coordination of CBSA-related inquiries. Assist to resolve customs-related issues, including holds, inspections, and penalties. Ensure compliance with trade agreements, duty relief programs, and tariff regulations (e.g., CUSMA/USMCA, CKFTA, duty drawback, annex codes, etc.) Maintain proper record-keeping and audit readiness in accordance with regulatory requirements. Provide guidance to internal teams on customs procedures and documentation standards. Support finance and operations with duty cost visibility, variance analysis, and reporting.
Financial & Compliance Oversight
Validate and approve customs-related invoices (duties, tariffs, brokerage fees)
Ensure alignment with budgeted duty spend and landed cost assumptions. Identify opportunities for cost optimization (duty savings, classification accuracy, program utilization) Support internal and external customs audits and compliance reviews.
Required Competencies
CCS or equivalent customs certification (required). Minimum 3+ years’ experience in customs, trade compliance, and logistics operations. Strong knowledge of customs regulations, tariff classification, and import/export processes. Experience working with customs brokers and freight partners. Familiarity with trade agreements and duty programs. Experience supporting a CSA importer would be an asset.

Strong attention to detail and regulatory compliance focus. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced distribution environment. Analytical mindset with focus on cost, risk, and operational efficiency. Effective communication and stakeholder management skills. Proficiency in SAP and customs/trade compliance tools.
