This position will promote the PEI Apprenticeship Program through meetings and interactions with new/prospective apprentices, employers, and stakeholders within the trades. The Officer will also coordinate processes for advancing the Red Seal Brand, compulsory trades, and provincial trades in PEI. This will include recruitment, participation in Trade Advisory Committees (National, Atlantic, Provincial), administering progress and certification exams, and general client oversight to support apprentices and tradespeople towards advancing certification and career goals in the trades.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Review and approve applications for apprenticeship;
  • Complete the apprenticeship contract;
  • Maintain apprentices’ logbooks through the content management system;
  • Receive, investigate, and mediate participant complaints;
  • Participate or lead National and Atlantic initiatives regarding cross jurisdictional apprenticeship collaboration;
  • Recruitment for participation in trade advisory groups;
  • Assist with workshop facilitation;
  • Assist on exam banks;
  • Visit high schools, Holland College, and job sites to explain and promote the Apprenticeship Program as well as careers in the trades;
  • Participate in Career Days and Career Expos across PEI;
  • Partner with community and industry groups to promote and provide apprenticeship training information to clients;
  • Administer programs to enhance new entrants to apprenticeship i.e. Under-represented groups;
  • Facilitate new forms of training including alternative delivery and blended learning;
  • Administer and promote projects designed to promote apprenticeship progression i.e. Virtual Learning Strategist;
  • Assist in the scheduling of in-school training for apprentices both on and off Island;
  • Assist in the scheduling and administration of apprentice progress exams at training centres; and
  • Visit apprentices during in-school training to review progress and assess the level of satisfaction with their training.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Red Seal;
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered;
  • Extensive experience with apprenticeship, i.e. Trades person, Trades instructor, Trades Company owner, or Trades administrator;
  • Experience in the administration and/or case management required in the delivery of programs or services principally targeting youth;
  • Experience in outreach to industry;
  • Experience in the use of software including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook;
  • Experience working with stakeholders on a project, (i.e. vendor groups or levels of government);
  • Must be able to work independently and be highly self-motivated and directed;
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiating, inter-personal, and communications skills; and
  • A proven ability to develop good working relations with external organizations and agencies.

Other Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree diploma or certificate within trades is an asset;
  • Working knowledge and experience in change management processes is an asset;
  • Experience with negotiation and facilitation is an asset.
