About the role

This fully remote opportunity is with a Valsoft company, part of a growing network of vertical market software businesses. Valsoft specializes in acquiring and scaling mission-critical software companies across diverse industries, supporting them with a long-term, decentralized model. The role is open to candidates based in Canada, with a preference for those on the East Coast to align with team collaboration hours. As Solutions Architect (Azure/.NET), you’ll build and lead the Modernization Team, oversee the Core Platform Team, and coach engineers to contribute to the modern stack, serving as the bridge between business, product, and engineering. Expect to design, code, review, and mentor to deliver outcomes safely and quickly.

What You’ll Do & Responsibilities

Architecture & Roadmap

  • Own the Target Architecture: Define the cloud-native reference architecture across application, data, identity, security, observability, and operations on Azure.

  • Modernization Roadmap: Publish a phased migration plan with owners, milestones, risks, and quantified ROI/TCO; balance speed and simplicity.

  • Reference Implementations (“Golden Paths”): Provide service templates, API standards, data access patterns, messaging/eventing, and cross-cutting concerns (authN/Z, logging, caching).

  • Architecture Artifacts: Produce diagrams, sequence/ER models, interface contracts, and ADRs.

Delivery & Execution (Hands-On)

  • Ship With the Team: Contribute code in C#/.NET for critical services, migration adapters, data pipelines, and automated test harnesses.
  • Platform Engineering on Azure: Evolve PaaS foundations (App Services/Functions, Front Door/WAF, Storage, Azure SQL & PostgreSQL) and adopt AKS where containers bring clear value (autoscaling, isolation, portability).
  • Observability by Default: Standardize logs, metrics, traces, and actionable alerts.
  • Bridge Core ↔ Modern: Keep the Core Platform Team shipping while carving migration seams; use strangler and anti-corruption patterns for incremental cutovers.

Team Building & Leadership

  • Build the Modernization Team: Hire/assemble a high-leverage squad (backend, SRE/DevOps, QA automation); set coding standards, rituals, and velocity expectations.
  • Oversee the Core Platform Team: Provide architectural guardrails, code reviews, release gates, and operational guidance to maintain reliability and security.
  • Coach Toward Convergence: Pair with Core Platform Engineers, run targeted upskilling, and create a rotation plan so they progressively contribute to modernization epics.
  • Unified Planning: Maintain a single, transparent backlog that sequences modernization work alongside maintenance, with clear Definition of Ready/Done and acceptance criteria.

Analysis, Governance & Communication

  • Requirements & Feasibility: Lead discovery workshops; crystallize business needs into coherent solution designs and measurable outcomes.
  • Trade-off & TCO Analysis: Quantify cost/performance/resiliency/operability trade-offs.
  • Stakeholder Storytelling: Present application orientations and decision rationale to executives and non-technical stakeholders; ensure decisions are socialized and traceable.

Requirements

Communication & Analysis

  • Ability to write clear documentation and present application orientations (design intent, roadmaps, operating model).
  • Excellent listening and communication skills with recognized expertise in requirements gathering and stakeholder alignment.
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and technical skills; convert complexity into pragmatic, shippable designs.

Technical Skills

  • Programming & Frameworks: In-depth .NET/C#; working fluency with Angular and Vue.js (component/service boundaries, integration patterns).
  • Cloud Architecture (Azure): App Services/Functions, Front Door/WAF, Storage, Azure SQL & PostgreSQL; AKS experience strongly preferred.
  • SDLC & DevOps: Deep knowledge of SDLC, DevOps, CI, automated testing, and Agile; hands-on with GitHub Actions and/or Octopus Deploy (or equivalent); IaC with Bicep a plus.
  • Enterprise Interconnectivity: API-first design, service-to-service security, OIDC/JWT, messaging/eventing, contract versioning.
  • Scalability & Performance Modeling: Capacity planning, load/perf testing strategies, caching, and telemetry-driven optimization.
  • Architecture Trade-offs: Structured decision-making with ADRs; risk-driven spikes/POCs; migration patterns (strangler, anti-corruption layer).

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years applied solutions architecture.
  • Delivered medium- to large-scale projects: implementing business solutions and integrating with existing enterprise tools.
  • Experience leading multi-system migrations/modernizations.
  • Independent thinker with strong technology awareness, able to integrate disparate concepts into original, pragmatic solutions.

Other Details

  • Location: Canada, hours to align with East Cost working hours.
  • Language: Strong written and verbal English.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and commission structure.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • The chance to make a significant impact in a growing software company.
