Job Summary
The Senior Manager, Marketing and Events enhances the reputation of
entrepreneurship@UBC
and the university at large by leading the strategic planning, development, and execution of external marketing initiatives and events to the UBC and wider technology and research community. As a world class incubator/accelerator program, this role leads awareness building and conversion initiatives that further the unit’s mandate of building intrapreneurship and entrepreneurship across the university’s community of students, staff, faculty as well as alumni populations through broad and far reaching marketing campaigns.
The position will advance the organization’s goals through the implementation and delivery of marketing and communications materials across digital and print via timely and informative campaigns, reports and initiatives, highlighting the progress of entrepreneurship@UBC and their venture/researcher community. The Senior Manager, Marketing and Events is responsible for the planning, project management and reporting of all external marketing and communications strategies for the unit (including website content, digital channels, print materials, promotions/media/sponsorship management and more) to support the unit’s growth and mission.
This position will also liaise across faculty/units and with external service providers, as well as identify new advertisement/publicity opportunities to share the stories of UBC entrepreneurs. They will work collaboratively across entrepreneurship@UBC as well as the university at large to promote their initiatives, recruit venture/researcher talent and build the organization’s brand.
The Senior Manager, Marketing and Events is critical to furthering UBC’s reputation as a renowned venture creation hub and place of innovation, attracting key funders and supporters around the world.
Organizational Status
The Senior Manager, Marketing and Events will work collaboratively with
entrepreneurship@UBC staff, founders, Entrepreneurs-in-Residence and the UBC VPRI Communications team to enhance the reputation of entrepreneurship@UBC and their venture portfolio through various marketing and event efforts.
This role will report to the Managing Director and will ensure venture efforts are cohesive and consistent with the larger Innovation UBC and overall UBC brand.
Work Performed
- Leads the strategy, management and execution of campus wide and external marketing and communications activities across print and digital to support entrepreneurship@UBC’s and UBC’s strategic goals and stakeholder needs. This role will target the university’s population of students, staff, faculty and alumni network, serving a large and far reaching audience that is both internal and external to UBC.
- Develops and manages results-driven strategic communications and marketing activities across multiple media formats including: email marketing, social media, content marketing, advertising (sponsorship and paid advertising), search engine optimization (SEO), brochures, venture assets, press/media, surveys and other integrated digital/print activities from concept onwards, ensuring alignment with UBC’s larger strategic agenda.
- Integrates brand strategy, SEO/optimization, content marketing, communications strategy and more across all marketing and promotional activities/channels, creating original content as well as sharing UGC.
- Develops marketing and communications materials branding; responsible for monitoring and ensuring communications branding policies are adhered to; ensures content aligns with UBC’s web guidelines and accessibility standards.
- Plans and executes the marketing and logistics of events including monthly Town Halls, workshops, Fireside Chats, venture orientations and marquee events including the Venture and Investor Showcases and entrepreneurship@UBC Immersion Week (800+ people).
- Plans, implements and reports on marketing activities that support entrepreneurship@UBC’s recruitment and awareness building goals in line with mandate and unit-wide objectives, generates awareness of the program, and builds engagement with our audience; reviews/manages performance and reports on marketing outcomes and events.
- Manages and analyzes marketing databases and reporting; leads the development of ad hoc, quarterly and annual program reports for internal stakeholders, external stakeholders and funders. Reports on data and insights and owns the reporting metrics for the marketing and communications team.
- Provides marketing training and support for venture community; consults and advises on venture marketing and communications efforts through 1:1 support as well as the development of workshops and venture materials including media and PR, case studies, marketing plans and more.
- Collaborates with entrepreneurship@UBC stakeholders to source stories that will promote ventures/researchers in our ecosystem in alignment with entrepreneurship@UBC key messages and mission statements; communicates with entrepreneurship@UBC alumni and current ventures to record and promote recent major milestones, successes and general updates.
- Formulates and manages the budget of marketing campaigns and sponsorship spends across channels including paid advertising and sponsorships; responsible for marketing expense reports.
- Responsible for liaising and managing relationships with external stakeholders including media/public relations teams; manages queries and plans advertising/publicity initiatives.
- Collaborates across organization’s teams on cross functional projects and workflows
- Keeps current on evolving technologies and communication and engagement practices and is responsible for managing various marketing and communications platforms.
- Performs other related duties as required.

The role of the Senior Manager, Marketing and Events must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with internal and external stakeholders and the entrepreneurship@UBC and UBC brand at large. As an externally facing unit, this role will manage the external marketing and reputation of the organization, leading multiple projects and strategies, and must make decisions on how best to manage the work given, based on the timeframe, the relative strategic importance of the projects and the impact for failing to meet stakeholder needs and deadlines.
This role is responsible for representing entrepreneurship@UBC, UBC and various UBC ventures who are part of entrepreneurship@UBC program; error in judgment could have grave impacts on the unit’s and university’s brand and image in the BC startup and business community.
The consequence of error in this position could be serious for entrepreneurship@UBC since it concerns the public image and profile of UBC and entrepreneurship@UBC in the startup community at the local, national and international level.
Supervision Received
