Cloud Engineer

The Role:

The Cloud Engineer will deploy, maintain, and optimize cloud-based solutions while ensuring they remain secure and aligned with operational requirements.
The position is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing PHO’s security posture by implementing robust cloud security and application security measures.

Key Responsibilities-

  • Provides cloud infrastructure management by configuring, monitoring, and maintaining PHO cloud environment (i.e. Azure, AWS, and SaaS partners) to ensure high availability, reliability, and scalability.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for cloud operations processes and procedures, including provisioning, monitoring, patching, and incident response to support engineering, security, and operational processes.
  • Proactively identifies areas for process improvement and implements best practices to streamline operations and reduce manual effort.
  • Investigates and resolves complex cloud infrastructure issues, partnering with internal teams and external teams as needed.
  • Collaborates with and supports customer-facing teams to ensure customer satisfaction, timely resolution of issues, and delivery of services including but not limited to monitoring alerts and responding to incidents.
  • Provides engineering consulting and recommendations for all new Cloud systems to ensure the interoperability and adherence to technology standards and policies of all systems.
  • Provides recommendations and expertise as it relates to cloud and platform provisioning within the organization.
  • Provides continuous process improvement suggestions to develop a robust and efficient cloud services security assessment process.
  • Stays informed about the latest trends and developments in cloud security and offers recommendations for improving security configurations based on emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Maintains knowledge of the latest trends and advancements in cloud computing, relevant security technologies, microservices architecture, and ML/AI, and apply relevant knowledge to improve the platform's capabilities.
  • Identifies, defines and documents and implements security system requirements for Azure, and other cloud service providers with a focus on preventative, detective and auto-remediating controls.
  • Collaborates with Digital and Cyber Security Operations team to implement, maintain, operate, and support security tools and initiatives, including remediation of detected vulnerabilities both during the development lifecycle and after deployment to live environments.
  • Designs solutions that ensure maximum flexibility and scalability, while meeting all required security controls.
  • Contributes to disaster recovery, business continuity, data backup and restoration, and related auditing and verification activities to ensure the integrity and availability of the cloud environment.
  • Works closely with HR, Finance, and other corporate partners to ensure the application and execution of security controls within back-office systems (e.g. Workday HRIS).

Knowledge and Skills-

  • Excellent understanding of Azure cloud infrastructure management, including proficiency with Azure's core services such as Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Functions, and Microsoft Entra.
  • Expertise with cloud computing fundamentals and best practices for deployment, operations, and support of products and services in the cloud.
  • Automation and DevSecOps experience including ability to code to automate system-level deployment using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts and virtualized environments within Azure, including ability to manage and troubleshoot network configurations and ensure secure and efficient connectivity.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cloud security engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cloud-based technologies, covering data storage, networking, and cyber security.
  • Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating system administration.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate closely with other Digital and Data team to support their needs.
  • Leadership and technical skills to promote best practices for security and privacy to maintain a secure environment.
  • Written communication skills to create and maintain comprehensive documentation of infrastructure designs, processes, and procedures for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with other teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Education and Experience-

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of overall technology/operations experience with 5 years cloud-specific experience.
  • Azure certifications highly desirable, other certifications (e.g. AWS) desirable.
  • Comprehensives understanding of cloud computing concepts, preferably with experience in Azure and AWS.
  • Experience with implementing and managing security controls (e.g., NG firewalls, WAF, intrusion detection/prevention systems, XDR, etc.).
  • Experience in designing, building, testing and deploying highly scalable and resilient cloudbased infrastructure.
  • Experience working with security analysts to apply security frameworks and configurations to meet standards and regulations, such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST, and PHIPA.
  • Experience in designing and implementing continuous code and infrastructure delivery using CI/CD tools.

Attributes and Competencies-

  • Relied upon by senior management and executive to exercise significant independence of judgement and autonomy with respect to time sensitive operational issues (e.g. service outages, cyber security issues).
  • Work is conducted within the framework of PHO policies, protocols and standards, provincial privacy legislation, OPS I&IT operational and security requirements and cloud security engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Provides recommendations and expertise as it relates to cloud and platform provisioning within the organization.
  • Problem-solving skills for Azure and AWS services to quickly identify and remediate common issues.
  • Troubleshoots system behaviour anomalies, determines root cause, and the appropriate technical resolution.
  • Conducts post-incident reviews to identify root causes, document findings, and implement preventative measures.
  • Ensures cloud environments comply with relevant security standards and regulations.
  • Provides engineering consulting and recommendations for all new Cloud systems to ensure the interoperability and adherence to technology standards and policies of all systems.
  • Analyzes system performance metrics and recommends improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency.
  • Ensures the continuous availability and performance of production and other environments.
  • Stays informed about the latest trends and developments in cloud security and recommends improvements to security configurations based on emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
