Location

These positions are required to work in person at 3330 Harvester Road, or Brant Hills, 2300 Duncaster Drive, Burlington, Ontario. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, or Supervisor of Parks, Gardener/Landscapers are responsible for preparing and maintaining horticultural displays in parks as well as general parks maintenance activities throughout on City-owned properties throughout Burlington.

Responsibilities

The Gardener/Landscaper will provide a variety of services, such as:

  • Lead and train crew members on the safe operation of equipment, tools and safe work procedures maintaining various horticultural displays
  • Prepare, install, maintain and remove plantings, including watering, amendments, fertilizing, weeding and pruning
  • Operate handheld equipment and hand tools related to grass cutting, sportsfield maintenance and general park maintenance activities
  • Perform minor adjustments, day-to-day and routine maintenance on equipment and tools used for horticultural and park maintenance tasks
  • Pick litter and empty garbage receptacles from parks, playgrounds, parking lots, and roadsides etc.
  • Open, close, inspect, clean and disinfect public washroom facilities
  • Participate in loose leaf and winter control operations.
  • Complete administrative tasks in an accurate and timely manner; including daily activity sheets, training documentation and other required paperwork.
  • Comply with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

You have completed a 2-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in horticulture, or a closely related field of study along with one (1) to two (2) years of relevant gardening/landscaping experience. You possess good judgment, problem solving and customer service skills. Shift work will be required depending on time of year.

A valid DZ driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire). Applicants without a DZ license must have a valid Class G licence with an acceptable driver’s abstract as outlined above, and be willing to obtain a Class DZ license.
