Animal Care within the Department of Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS) provides
husbandry support to animal-based research at Western.
Responsibilities
The Animal Care Assistant is responsible for holiday and weekend coverage for designated animal husbandry services, housekeeping duties and maintenance tasks, including associated documentation, record keeping and reporting. Incumbents must be able to work with all current species within the ACVS managed facilities at various containment levels. Responsibilities assigned will be performed following all standard operating procedures (SOPs); in accordance with prescribed ergonomic methods and practices; and in compliance with all regulatory requirements, university policies and Animal Use Protocols (AUPs).
Schedule availability (one day shift on weekends, all statutory holidays, university holidays and planned closure days. Hours may include starting before 7:00 a.m. and finishing after 4:30 p.m. on weekends.
Qualifications
Education:
- Enrollment in a post-secondary science or other research-based program would be considered an asset
Experience:
- Previous work experience in a similar role (e.g., veterinary clinics, animal shelters, farms, stables) or within ACVS
Demonstrated Skills and Abilities:
- Compassion for research animals
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Effective communications
- Attention to detail
- Organization, prioritization, time management and multi-tasking
- Exemplary attendance, punctuality, reliability, and maturity
- Adaptability and flexibility
- Confidentiality and discretion
