**Location -**This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

The Biogeochemical Analytical Service Laboratory (BASL), a core facility at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, is a research-based analytical service provider. Accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, the BASL provides inorganic, organic, low-level mercury, and stable isotope ratio analytical services in environmental, ecological, and medical disciplines for University researchers and other clients.

This position will lead a team in the Mercury Division and report to the lab manager at the BASL to analyze total mercury, methylmercury in water, sediments, and biological samples. It is also responsible for the determination of metal analysis using ICP-MS or ICP-OES. The position will conduct internal audits for the laboratory's QA/QC system and perform the lab Safety Officer's duties.

  • Coordinates and provides overall support to different projects and graduate students in the laboratory.

  • Leads a team to perform mercury analysis in the Mercury Division.

  • Conducts internal audit for the laboratory's quality management system and analytical methods.

  • Analyzes total mercury and methylmercury in water and biological samples.

  • Performs major cations and trace metals tests by ICP-OES or ICP-MS.

  • Validates and verifies analytical procedures and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Perform the Safety Officer's duties in the laboratory.

  • Maintain updated SDS sheets and reagent log for all the Chemicals stored in the lab.

  • A minimum of a B.Sc. in chemistry or relevant disciplines.

  • Strong knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025.

  • Experience in internal audit for the laboratory quality management system and analytical procedures.

  • Excellent organizational, and management skills.

  • At least three-year experience in leading a team in an analytical laboratory.

  • Minimum five-year experience in mercury and methylmercury analysis.

  • Experience in trace metal analysis in the environment and biological samples.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.

  • Experience in the Tekran mercury analyzer, the Tekran methylmercury analyzer, inductively coupled.

  • Certificate of ISO/IEC 17025 internal audit course.

  • Certificate of understanding ISO/IEC 17025.
