The Position: As the leader for the Interface group, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our vehicle technology, and how our stakeholders interact with everything under the TAC division’s portfolio. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, your expertise will drive the product roadmap and tech stack to enable both MacLean end users, like vehicle operators, and internal MacLean stakeholders, like field service technicians, to have more streamlined and modern experiences a wide range of products. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of a rapidly growing technology sector, directly contributing to innovative solutions for real-world challenges in underground mining – solving matters of safety, efficiency, productivity, orchestration, and sign off.

Responsibilities and Duties

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Own the technical architecture and strategy for TAC’s Interface portfolio, applying deep expertise in technologies such as Qt/QML, CODESYS, relational and non-relational databases, and REST API development to ensure cohesive, scalable system design.
  • Lead the design and development of on-vehicle HMI software across 6+ vehicle product families, delivering robust, maintainable solutions for both in-cab and basket operations in underground mining environments.
  • Expand GUI capabilities beyond the vehicle, developing modular, extensible interfaces that support both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight teleoperation through tablet and desktop applications.
  • Centralize internal deployment tooling by integrating and streamlining orchestration systems under a unified architecture, advancing subsystem automation for configuration, testing, programming, and coordination across TAC’s on-vehicle technologies and downstream dependencies.
  • Align cross-domain priorities between the Deployments, Operator Experience, and other TAC teams to deliver unified, high-performing interface solutions that meet the needs of operators, production, and field users.

Team Development & Agile Execution

  • Lead a multi-team automation group through agile execution, serving as Scrum of Scrums facilitator to coordinate sprint planning, remove blockers, and drive alignment across workstreams at scale.
  • Provide technical mentorship and role-based development for team members across GUI, API, and tool (PLC, App) development, with a focus on cultivating system-level thinking and innovation.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development to ensure technical depth and long-term succession planning within the group.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Translate operational and customer use cases into scalable process tooling architectures, interface definitions, and technical roadmaps.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with controls, telematics, systems, and product management teams to ensure cohesive development and deployment of automation features.
  • Act as technical point-of-contact for program management and senior leadership, aligning automation deliverables with business and field performance goals.

Compliance, Documentation & Quality

  • Ensure rigorous documentation of system design, configuration, and testing activities to support compliance with applicable standards (e.g., ISO 19296, ISO 13849, ISDO 61508).
  • Lead efforts to standardize software release strategies and pre-release validation workflows that support traceability, auditability, and long-term maintainability.

First Year Goals:

  • Establish a unified, high-performing automation organization by integrating existing teams under a shared vision, delivery model, and culture—implementing a Scrum of Scrums framework, clear roles, cross-functional communication, joint technical backlogs, and a focus on shared ownership and iterative delivery.
  • Drive the migration of TAC’s on-vehicle and remote operator interfaces from legacy CODESYS visualization environments to a modern Qt/QML-based architecture. Establish the design framework, coding standards, and modular UI component library needed for scalable development across all vehicle product families, while ensuring reliability and performance in underground operating conditions.
  • Lead company-wide adoption of consistent software deployment, configuration, and testing workflows anchored in the MacLean Advanced Production Deployment System (MAPDS). Collaborate across TAC and production teams to define clear automation pathways, training resources, and success metrics that improve deployment speed, traceability, and integration quality across all digital controls products.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in software engineering or related field with the job responsibilities and duties directly related to those described above, mining or mobile vehicle specific experience is an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, robotics, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification.
