This position is TEMPORARY and has a term length of three years from the start date.

Location

This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at Augustana Campus, Camrose.

Candidates must be willing and able to work in Camrose in person at the Augustana Campus.

Located in Camrose on Treaty 6 territory, Augustana Campus offers a unique learning experience rooted in the arts and sciences and is embedded in rural Alberta. Hope to approximately 900 students, the campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs through the Augustana Faculty and the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Augustana provides close-knit, supportive learning environments with extensive opportunities for student engagement in athletics, clubs and campus life - delivering a small campus experience with a world-class degree.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Sr. Partner or Partner, Communications and Marketing, the Communications Coordinator supports Augustana Campus priorities and departments in the delivery of integrated communications, marketing, digital and creative services to internal and external audiences.

Executing significant hands-on marketing/communication duties, the Communications Coordinator reviews complex work with more senior staff prior to release.

The Vice-President - External Relations leads the University of Alberta’s efforts to enhance and protect its reputation locally, nationally, and globally. This role oversees the development and execution of strategic initiatives that shape how internal and external audiences perceive the university.

With a focus on communication, engagement, and relationship-building, the Vice-President provides leadership for Communications and Marketing, Alumni Relations, Advancement, and Government and Community Relations. These teams collaborate to support the university’s brand, foster donor and alumni engagement, and establish strong connections with public and community partners.

Through these coordinated efforts, the Vice-President - External Relations ensures the university’s image, influence, and impact are advanced in alignment with its mission, values, and long-term goals.

Planning and Coordination

  • Contributes to communications and marketing plans for key Augustana initiatives, programs or audiences.
  • Develops and executes Augustana communication plans and tactics and provides KPI reports to relevant parties under the general supervision of senior staff.
  • Analyzes market research, data/trends and identifies opportunities within the post-secondary, local, and regional markets
  • Maintains positive client relationships and effective communication with colleagues even when there are diverging opinions.

Ensures deliverables are on time and - in accordance with the communications plans and under direction from the project lead- - achieve intended outcomes.

  • Plans workback schedules and tracks projects using a project management system.
  • Supports the administration and promotion of events at Augustana.
  • Support the coordination of local vendors
  • Supports the adaptation of all strategies centrally developed by External Relations to the specific situation of Augustana Campus
  • Supports the U of A presence in a geographically distinct and rural-based community

Channel Management

  • Coordinates and contributes to the maintenance of Augustana channels (social media, digests, websites, newsletters, etc.) used to communicate with university and external audiences.
  • Coordinates dynamic content for channels that is aligned with editorial planning and consistent with brand voice. Coordinates and solicits creative posts from staff, faculty and guest bloggers. Edits and promotes content.
  • Regularly monitors channel metrics and delivers reporting to internal experts and non-expert audiences.

Writing and Production

  • Writes and creates material for targeted audiences across a variety of channels and in collaboration with central resources/departments wherever possible to elevate the visibility, profile, relevance and reputation of Augustana

  • Develops written and visual communications, which can include but is not limited to key messages, briefing notes, presentations, speeches, newsletters, news stories, web content, speaking notes, correspondence, website content, marketing copy, photos and video that is in support of high-impact areas and initiatives at Augustana Campus.

  • Creates, edits and posts creative content for social media platforms.
    Contextualizes institutional messaging for area-specific needs and audiences (students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community, partners, etc).

  • Supports the liaison with internal and external creative resources to develop and produce materials, including copywriting, graphic design, photography, videography and material production.

  • Performs layout work when required (working within established templates, newsletters, presentations, etc.).

  • Assesses the writing style necessary for each project.

  • Checks for accuracy with subject matter experts.

  • Ensures all existing and developed publication and promotional materials are consistent with the visual identity and brand and editorial guidelines of the institution.

  • Provides editing, fact-checking and proofreading support to Augustana departments, under the direction of the Communications & Marketing Partner, as needed.

  • A degree or diploma in a related field.

  • Possesses one to three years progressive communications or journalism experience within a complex, multi-departmental organization.

  • Experience working with a print magazine or similar publication is considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with the Camrose region and/or Augustana Campus is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of a post-secondary environment is a plus.

  • Ability to balance competing priorities and meet and manage client expectations.

  • High degree of professionalism and judgement.

  • Strong research, communication skills.

  • Ability to identify target audience preferences and build content to meet them.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills both written and oral and ability to work with all levels of staff and management.

  • Ability to create strong relationships through effective communication and client service to ensure deliverables are met.

  • Ability to maintain positive client relationships even when there are diverging opinions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively to ensure consistent and complementary plans and events.
