About the role

Technologist

Provide timely, high-quality analysis for routine and non-routine samples to support Production, R&D, and external customers. Responsibilities include thermal spraying, flame brazing, coating and metallography preparation, mechanical and physical testing (hardness, density, particle size, FTIR), and chemical analysis (ICP, electroplating, gravimetric methods). Prepare reports and data for customers. Senior technologists should demonstrate advanced troubleshooting, method development, experimental design, documentation, and support for quality systems such as ISO/AS 9100 and Nadcap. They also lead project teams in material analysis techniques. Duties include equipment setup and instrument calibration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct routine sample analysis (Sieves, ICP, Electroplating, Metallography, Hardness, SEM, etc.) for quality control purposes.
  • Metallographic preparation and evaluation of powders and coated specimens, including section, mount, grind and polish, hardness testing, microstructure by optical microscope and SEM.
  • Calibrate, maintain and trouble-shoot instruments.
  • Maintain controlled lab procedures and documentation.
  • Participate in development, implementation, and maintenance of new processes in the laboratory.
  • Powder sampling in operations of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Adhere to and actively enhance the safety programs.
  • Follows good lab practices including; housekeeping, maintenance of traceability, consumable inventory monitoring, and SPC charting.
  • Participates in internal and external audits through test observations to ensure compliance to third party regulatory requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Post secondary education in Chemical Technology, Engineering Technology, Materials Science, or equivalent is the minimum requirement.
  • Utilization of gained knowledge in complex techniques is applied and shared with junior staff when troubleshooting problems and commissioning projects.
  • Specialized on the job training (manufacturer training) is applied to the analytical lab and shared with junior staff.
  • Dedicates themselves as a role model with their hands on laboratory skills working with chemicals and maintaining a high standard of lab housekeeping.
  • Provides insights into areas of continuous improvement; streamlining processes; making recommendations of equipment to be replaced.
  • Is a leader when promoting a positive workplace culture and embracing organizational change.
